Position Information
The City of Pittsburg seeks a UTILITY LINEWORKER (Electric) for the Pittsburg Power Company.
The Pittsburg Power Company (PPC) conducts business in the City of Pittsburg and on Mare Island in Vallejo, CA. PPC is a publicly owned utility municipal company that provides electric and natural gas services at Mare Island. Although PPC is small compared to investor owned utilities, staff is available to work at a personal level to meet the needs of customers who range from residential to large commercial companies and entrepreneurs.
The Utility Lineworker performs a wide variety of maintenance, repair, testing and construction work on the electric distribution system, provides efficient and timely response to emergency operations as assigned; provides efficient customer service, and functions as a positive and cooperative team member. This position is located on Mare Island in Vallejo, CA. Incumbents perform more routine and less complex electrical duties in a training capacity. The ideal candidate will have had experience in medium voltage electrical distribution systems. The successful candidate will have opportunity to train for and learn the skill sets of the Utility Technician job classification for career development and growth.
The standard work hours are from 7:00am – 3:30pm but employees must be able to work standby shifts, after hours, holidays, and weekends to respond to outages, scheduled or emergency work.
- Electrical systems construction, operations and maintenance experience.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. Examples of Duties
- Learns and performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, and construction activities within electric and gas distribution systems and related utility facilities operations.
- Learns to and cleans a variety of properties or facilities, sweeps, rakes, blows, hoses down and shovels debris; load and unloads trucks of refuse, trimmings, soil, sand, rock, and other materials; paints, repairs, and maintains a variety of utility facilities and related equipment such as fencing, substations and replaces worn or broken parts; may construct forms, mixes and pours cement, performs other masonry tasks and assists in gas and electric system preventative maintenance activities.
- Performs a variety of unskilled/semi-skilled and heavy physical labor; removes, hauls, and dumps trash.
- Operates a variety of motorized, power, and hand-powered machines and equipment to include: roller, dump truck, back hoe/front loader, jackhammer, tamper, compressor, arc welder, mower, concrete saw, auger or sand blasting machine, pick-up truck, shovels, rakes, picks, hoes, wrenches, edgers, drills, and saws.
- Performs preventative and routine maintenance on motorized and power equipment; notifies appropriate personnel regarding needed repairs and/or other operational problems.
- Identifies a variety of safety/health hazards, as well as, gas and electric facilities in need of maintenance or repair; notifies appropriate party of potential problems to ensure a timely and effective response.
- Responds to emergency calls on weekends, holidays, and evenings as assigned.
- May provide lead direction to seasonal employees.
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the general public.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience: The equivalent of a high school diploma and three (3) years of applicable experience in construction, maintenance, or related work. Experience in the electric or gas industry is desirable.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid class C California state driver's license.
Other Requirements: Physically and mentally capable of performing the functions of the job summarized in the Typical Tasks.
