Upper School Assistant Principal
Friends' Central seeks an Assistant Principal for our Upper School division. This is a full-time position beginning on July 1, 2023. Candidates should have at least seven years of experience teaching high school students, as well as a bachelor's and advanced degree in a related field.
The Upper School Assistant Principal is a 12-month full-time exempt employee who reports to and works in partnership with the Upper School Principal. In the absence of the Upper School Principal, the Assistant Principal acts as the administrator-in-charge of the division. A successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of current research around teaching and learning, have an understanding of the developmental needs of 14-18 year-old students, be committed to the Schools Quaker values and mission, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. In collaboration with the Upper School Principal, the Assistant Principal is responsible for the smooth operation of the division, working with faculty, department heads, and grade level deans, and the Dean of Students.
In addition, we are looking for a leader who will:
be an enthusiastic teacher and supportive guide for Upper School students
stay current with best practices in teaching, including incorporating technology, differentiating instruction, and progressive pedagogy
be an engaged member of the Friends Central faculty and wider community
have the mindset and ability to work in partnership with families and students
assist with the day-to-day operations of the Upper School
Faculty
Support class observations and the Schools formal evaluation process, especially with faculty new to Friends' Central
Attend and participate in Department Chairs meetings
Attend and participate in Dean of Students and grade level Deans meetings
Collaborate with the Principal on faculty staffing for the division
Develop and maintain systems for assigning faculty duties (study halls, campus supervision, etc)
Teach one course in the Upper School
Students/Families
Work closely with the Dean of Students, Grade Deans, and the Student Support Services Team to ensure that students have what they need to succeed and grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually
In collaboration with the Dean of Students and Dean for Community and Leadership, support students and their extracurricular activities and encourage other staff to do the same
Collaborate with others to coordinate events for students, including orientation, Senior Night, and commencement
Support the Principal and Dean of Students in communicating and programming with families
Reporting
Proofread mid-semester and end-term report cards comments
Work with the Principal and faculty to address students with academic concerns
Scheduling
Participate as a member of the Middle/Upper School Scheduling Committee
Work with the Upper School administrative team to determine and implement any schedule changes for the upcoming year; monitor sectioning, class sizes, and faculty loads
Admissions/Enrollment
Attend Admissions functions
Assist Principal & Admissions staff at Admissions events
Collaborate with the Principal & Director of Enrollment Management on retention and new enrollment efforts
Serve as a member of the Upper School Admissions team
Support transition events and programming for rising ninth and incoming ninth grade students
With Principal
Observe, support, and evaluate faculty
Plan for the future educational/curricular needs of the Upper School division
Assist with recruiting and hiring new Upper School faculty
Enhance the Schools commitment to diversity and inclusivity
Serve as lead Upper School administrator in the Principals absence
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
7+ years of Upper School teaching experience.
3-5 years of administrative leadership experience in a school setting.
Demonstrated success as a school teacher and administrator who can motivate teams and guide others
Bachelors degree in education or academic subject field required
Masters degree in an academic subject field or in education preferred.
Physical Demands
Physical demands include dexterity for office machines including but not limited to writing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and printers. Moving about campus for student programs. Attending field trips. Stooping, bending, reaching and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
