Job Summary

The Underwriter Trainee is an entry level position in Donegal’s Underwriting Career Development Program. The candidate will be trained in the Commercial Lines Underwriting Department. Strong analytical skills and sound judgment are required to be successful in this role. This position requires candidates to work in the Marietta, PA office five days per week.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Select, price and develop coverage terms for accounts to achieve profitable underwriting results and assist with providing leadership, support and coaching for the underwriting function
• Manage a territory of independent agents to ensure that profitability and growth objectives for the company are being met
• Review new business applications to evaluate degree of risk involved; accept or decline risks based on company's underwriting policies

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor's Degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration or related degree OR:
  • Associate’s Degree and 2 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support and AU courses completed
  • High School Diploma and 4 years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support and AU designation achieved
• Demonstration of self-development by working towards attainment of professional insurance designations: INS, CPCU, ARM, API, AU, etc.
• Previous experience working in a professional office environment or prior insurance related experience
