Trail Crew Leader

Overview
The Trail Crew Leader is responsible for leading the trail crew as they perform trail maintenance and trail building tasks in the field. The Trail Crew Leader is part of a 4-5 person crew assigned to various locations based on available grant funding and grant deliverable deadlines.
Responsibilities
Trail Building and Maintenance
- Perform trail maintenance on trails including brushing, lopping, tread repair using loppers, chainsaws, McLeods, pulaskis, pick mattocks and shovels.
- Construct drainage features using dry stone masonry
- Construct new trails using sustainable trail techniques
- Completes trail work in a timely and efficient manner
- Acts as lead heavy equipment operator in collaboration with Assistant Trail CrewLeader
- Follows established protocol to ensure that project work quality remains consistent and meets SBTS standards and USFS specifications
- Maintain tools and equipment in accordance with established procedures
- Adhere to field safety protocols to ensure safety of self and others
- Follows all employee and safety handbook guidelines
Leadership
- Provide exceptional leadership to trail crew members to foster an environment that supports efficiency and safety
- Provides technical oversight of proper construction of drainage and that trails are built with sustainable trail techniques
- Assist the Trail Boss in the training of crew members
- Responsible for completing daily crew log
- Responsible for adhering to established work prescription for trail building and maintenance set forth by the Trail Boss
- Actively ensures all crew members are adhering to safety procedures including but not limited to wearing PPE, delivering tailgate for safety meetings, reporting safety concerns to the Trail Boss, and reporting all injuries to the Human Resource Department
- Create a safe and positive environment among crew members by keeping lines of communication open
- Maintains high morale by frequently recognizing the collective and individual successes and accomplishments of the teamVolunteer and Event Support
- Leads volunteer days as assigned ensuring safety protocols are followed and deliverables are met
- Actively engages with volunteers during trail days, epics and events to create a memorable experience
- Participate in set-up and clean-up for assigned events and trail days
- Provide event support for assigned SBTS events

- Endurance to conduct fieldwork in remote settings under strenuous conditions
- Ability to carry up to 50 lbs. over rough terrain and hike for an extended length of time in extreme heat.
Work Environment
- Fast paced, physically demanding work environment
- Occasional job related travel for training, meetings and/or events.
- Work with moving mechanical equipment (i.e. tools, chainsaws, mcleods,pulaskis, pick mattocks)
- Ability to work in an environment with unpredictable weather
- Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods of time
Preferred Skills and Certifications
- 3 Years of trail work experience
- Saw Certificate - B Faller
- Cross Cut Saw Certification
- Valid Driver's License Required
- Wilderness First Aid
- SBTS Certified Heavy Equipment Operator
