POSITION: Thoreau Elementary School Principal REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools START DATE: July 5, 2023APPLY BY: Friday, March 31, 2023Salary Range: $160,000 - $170,000POSITION DESCRIPTION: Concord Public Schools, located twenty miles west of Boston, is seeking a student-centered and dynamic educational leader in serving the 418 students, dedicated faculty, and involved parent community as the principal of the Thoreau Elementary School.Working in concert with the assistant principal, the principal serves as a teacher of teachers, focusing learning and teaching on increasing student achievement. The principal both oversees the daily operations of the school and provides long-term visioning to ensure student-centered, effective, and efficient practices. In addition, the principal implements policies and directives as assigned by the school district, the Massachusetts Department of Education, and the federal government. Working collaboratively with the superintendent of schools and all central office administrators, the principal implements policies and directives that promote the success of all students, accountability in all school practices, and fiscal responsibility.
The principal serves as a member of the administrative team and provides leadership in directing district initiatives. Professional Responsibilities: Serves as the school site leader, the primary liaison between the school and the district office, and the primary spokesperson between the school and the larger community Leads with integrity, courage, vision, hope, compassion, and joyMakes decisions based on sound educational principles Communicates the school and district vision, goals, needs, and accomplishments to students, school personnel, families, and the community Establishes and maintains a healthy school climate focusing on the learning of students and staff Promotes ongoing positive communication with parents and community agencies, effectively involving them in the education of children Works closely with the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to support the staff in developing and maintaining a rigorous and relevant course of study that meets the needs of students as outlined in the MA curriculum framework.Fosters a creative and innovative learning environment in which all students are inspired to excel. Establishes standards and expectations for proper student conduct; supports the appropriate methods to encourage discipline and commitment to adhere to established guides; maintains high expectations and motivation for all students to engage in continuous learning and development. Implements and supervises the evaluation of instructional programs; interprets data to improve learning and teaching Coordinates an effective and comprehensive site professional development program with staff members which focuses on the vision and goals of the school and which is consistent with district staff development goals and objectives Works closely with the Director of Student Services to ensure that the special education needs of children are met effectively and efficiently.
At times, participates in team meetings.Oversees the implementation of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System within the school, as appropriate Supervises and evaluates staff using performance standards; works to ensure excellence in instruction and ongoing improvement Demonstrates effective management of the school Collaborates well with staff in decision-making, team building, and developing productive strategies which foster improving learning and teaching Administers the school budget. Serves as the liaison between the central office and the school regarding financial decisions and concerns; works closely with the superintendent and director of finances and operations; communicates prudent fiscal practices to staff Maintains respectful, honest, open, and effective communication with school staff, the district office, parents, and community members; apprises the superintendent of significant events occurring in the school Oversees the management of the school facilities and services, working closely with the director of finances and operations to ensure productive practices Coordinates information technology and systems at the school level, collaborating closely with the director of technology to ensure consistency with the district technology plan and sound fiscal actions Observes all conditions of contracts and uses conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation strategies to resolve conflict; foresees problems and works to avoid them Recognizes and addresses bias in teaching materials, assessment instruments, school practices, and school organization Performs responsibilities as outlined by the superintendent of schools Minimum of a Masters degree. Substantial graduate study in educational administration, including courses in supervision & evaluation, curriculum and instruction, and financial and legal issues.
