Technical Staff - Optical System Architect Job at MIT Lincoln Laboratory

MIT Lincoln Laboratory Lexington, MA

The Advanced Capabilities and Systems Group is an agile, innovative, multi-disciplinary team developing novel system and technology concepts that address the nation’s critical security challenges. The group leverages focused analysis to understand solutions to defense and intelligence problems, and then develops the solutions in a fast cycle of experimentation and prototyping. Frequent engagements with government intelligence and military users connect the group to their unique missions and needs. Projects range from the analysis and prototyping of tactical military optics and radar systems, to investigation of novel communication, navigation, and autonomous systems. The multi-disciplinary team consists of talented technical staff with expertise in electromagnetics, optics, signal processing (communication, GPS), RF design, statistics, optimization, computer vision, machine learning, autonomous control, software engineering, and embedded systems.

Position Description

The group is looking for candidates that have depth in the optical domain across a wide range of applications such visual navigation, object detection, self-defense sensing for military vehicles, etc. Our group relies on staff that demonstrate depth and breadth in these areas to lead and contribute to programs for the DoD. We’re specifically looking for candidates that can analyze new concepts, develop algorithms and deploy them to cutting edge hardware for our prototypes. Our staff are given the unique opportunity to invent, analyze, design, build, test, and fly. It’s a rapid prototyping environment with access to some of the nation’s hardest problems.

Requirements

  • A Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or a related field (or Master’s with 5+ years directly-related experience)
  • Ability to think broadly about problems and perform deep analysis of complex components of a system
  • Ability to analyze system-level performance from first-principles to understand tradeoffs between hardware parameters (e.g., diffraction limited resolution, focal length, SNR, etc). Understanding of principles that impact operational utility of imagery, for example NIIRS and the ability to detect, recognize, and identify objects.
  • Knowledge to develop, implement, test and evaluate novel algorithms and concepts
  • Ability to clearly present technical concepts to wide spectrum of audiences
  • Proficient with high-level prototyping software languages (e.g., Matlab, Python)

Desired:

  • Image processing, computer vision, or object detection algorithm development
  • In-depth optical design and engineering trades (e.g., Zemax, CODEV, MODTRAN, etc).
  • Analytical or experimental experience with advanced techniques including hyperspectral, compressed sensing, sparse apertures, coded apertures, super resolution, etc.
  • Leading hardware and/or software teams in development of an optical system
  • Modeling and simulation of end-to-end optical systems, including the impact of Cloud-Free-Line of Sight (CFLOS) and atmospheric effects (e.g. MODTRAN)
