Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. We are seeking a professional to fill a Technical Research Professional position in the State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP) team in the Integrated Building Deployment and Analysis (IBDA) group within the Buildings and Transportation Sciences Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at ORNL. The team consists of researchers, technical professionals, and software developers focused on conducting research in world-class facilities and deploying science-based knowledge in real-world deployment applications. The work supports the U.S. DOE Weatherization Assistant Program and other customers by developing/supporting public-facing building energy analysis tools, evaluating efficacy of real-world installations of building retrofits for energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and improved occupant health and safety. This position requires working with external partners, corporations, and sponsors to develop and deploy solutions and technologies. Candidate selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
If selected, you will provide expert software development and insight to a multi-functional team providing a nation-wide software suite used to achieve energy and cost savings, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and expand energy justice. Major responsibilities include:
- Assist task lead in developing, testing, and implementing user interface (UI) changes
- Assist task lead in writing updated database queries and stored procedures
- Contribute to software design and participate in code reviews
- Author custom tools for UI and database (e.g., templates for UI conversion, conversion of MS Access data to MySQL)
- Author custom reports (SQL, PHP)
Basic Qualifications:
You will have earned a BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, and completed 5 years of experience. Other minimum qualifications include:
- Fluency in Linux and Windows, plus demonstrable programming skills in HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript.
- Verifiable experience with using frameworks (e.g., ExtJS), ability to use design patterns, and use of software engineering best practices for scalable, reliable, rapid implementation.
- Working knowledge of MySQL.
- Excellent communications skills for presentation of design concepts, practicable alternatives, and demonstrations in a group setting (in-person or virtual).
- Demonstrable success in team-based environments and ability to independently identify and solve challenging technical problems.
- Demonstrable commitment to ethical and professional values as well as maintain a compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
You may have some of the following preferred qualifications, though none are required:
- Extensive experience with ExtJS, Python and C
- Familiarity with MS Access
- Familiarity with the DOE Weatherization Assistance Program
