MTI Business Segment: Performance Materials

Position: Technical Director, Personal Care Products

Location: North America | USA | Hoffman Estates, IL

The Performance Materials segment is a leading supplier of bentonite and bentonite-related products, as well as chromite and leonardite, to industrial and consumer markets globally. Products offered by the Performance Materials segment include specially formulated green sand bond solutions for metalcasting, additives for powdered laundry detergent formulation, and pet litter. This segment operates more than 25 mining or production facilities worldwide. The Performance Materials segment also provides products for non-residential construction, environmental and infrastructure projects worldwide. It serves customers engaged in a broad range of construction projects, including site remediation, concrete waterproofing for underground structures, liquid containment on projects ranging from landfills to flood control, and drilling applications including foundation, slurry wall, tunneling, water well and horizontal drilling.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Director of Personal Care Products at our Hoffman Estates, IL location. The Personal Care Technical Director activities include development of delivery systems with Rx and cosmetic actives, expertise in skin care formulations, product claim support, and customer interactions for our branded & private label skin care products and our ingredients. Responsible for leading the development of both new products and modification of our existing raw material ingredients and finished products. We are a leading supplier of retinoid-based ingredients and finished products and clay-based rheology enhancing products. We formulate and manufacture clinically evaluated cosmetic and Rx grade products focused on improving skin health (i.e. anti-aging, acne treatment, mattifying, and sun protection) via delivery of active ingredients and our proprietary delivery agents. This position is located in the R&D group of the Performance Materials Business Unit of MTI and requires the ability to design formulas and utilize cosmetic and Rx active ingredients to develop new products and execute physical and chemical experiments and tests in a lab, pilot plant, or plant setting.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

- Work closely with the commercial team to develop business strategy, and:

• Lead the day-to-day activities of R&D team based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois to

enhance our global footprint and product development.

• Align project goals and objectives with the commercial team based on meeting the needs of our current and future customers.
• Independently performs research activities and new product development in laboratory, pilot scale or field environment.

- Work closely with our customers to obtain “Voice of Customer” of their needs in order to promote our products and help our customers commercialize their products with valid claims.

- Train our distributors to fully understand our technology and work with their customers to commercialize products.

- Work with our manufacturing teams in Lafayette, LA and Belle Fourche, SD to ensure manufacturing readiness, and successful product transfer from laboratory to manufacturing, and development of procedures to meet commercialization timelines.

- Lead the development of next generation raw materials including proof of concept testing, stability, development of formulation guidelines, clinical efficacy and safety testing and intellectual property development and management.

- Recognizes, uses and follows all corporate safety policies and procedures.

- Monitors and provides guidance for the successful completion of multiple research and development projects, using Hoshin Kanri methodology.

- Responsible for leading staff, including recruitment, selection, performance management and all other aspects of people leadership.

- Creates a positive workplace environment that fosters continuous improvement and relentless problem solving.

- Leads and promotes activities relating to key company initiatives: EHS, OE, Expense Reduction, and NPPD.

OE/Lean

• Actively lead and participate in the implementation of continuous improvement processes such as 5S, Kaizen, Daily Management Control, Standard Work, Hoshin Kanri, TPM, and QFD.
• Ensure tracking, daily management and use of key performance indicators to promote improved operational and business results (Plan-Do-Check-Act).

Qualifications

Knowledge:

• Incumbent must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline.
• Advance degree in Chemistry related to skin care and personal care preferred with 10+ years of experience in research and development.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in personal care active ingredient delivery and formulation development is required.
• Ideally the candidate would have experience with anti-aging actives like retinoids and familiarity with their use, efficacy, and formulation.
• Knows and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures normal to personal care and Rx formulations field of specialization.

Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to design formulas and utilize cosmetic and Rx active ingredients to develop new products and execute physical and chemical experiments and tests in a lab, pilot plant, or plant setting.
• Ability to operate a computer and relevant software for the position requirements.
• Speaks, reads, writes, and understands English language.

Physical & Mental:

• Extensive work in laboratory environment.
• Occasional climbing, bending, kneeling and walking in an industrial plant setting.

• Must wear safety equipment as required. Able to lift a minimum of 50lbs / 25 kg without difficulty

Travel:

• Ability to travel locally and internationally by air and car.
• Infrequent travel, typically 5-7 times per year. Trips can range between 3 and 5 business days
