Position Title: Associate Teacher
Reports to: Center Director & Lead Teacher
Supervises: Teacher Assistant
Classification: Full-Time Regular
Status: Hourly

Rate of Pay:

  • $19.32/Hour (R2/0) min 6 ECE Units, up to $22.38/Hour (R3/1) DOE & ECE Units / Associate Teacher Permit (ATP)
  • NOTE: Employees with 3 units in infant/toddler development will receive a $0.50 per hour premium (ITP) regardless of classroom/center assignment. (transcripts required)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

General Responsibilities

  • Obtains, reads, and understands the program philosophy, mission statement, personnel handbook, job descriptions, and other related materials covering all positions at the center including his/her own.
  • Delegates and performs general cleanup duties and organization of classroom to ensure daily, weekly, and monthly duties are complete; assist when optimal.
  • Oversees the USDA Food Program for your classroom; Ensure USDA Food Program paperwork is complete, and standards are met.
  • Facilitates necessary change to meet NAEYC accreditation standards.
  • Prepares for reviews by Social Service Licensing, CDE Child Development Division, Food/Nutrition services, and Grant-seekers/makers.
  • Participates in assigned staff and team meetings, yearly in-service trainings and off-site learning opportunities such as workshops or classes.

Classroom Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains children’s indoor and outdoor environments that are nurturing, secure, safe; prevents accidents, illness; encourages play, exploration; promotes problem solving, learning, and growth in all developmental areas; reflects children’s learning styles; and meets the needs of all children enrolled in the program.
  • Plans and implements curriculum for young children in areas such as self-concept, sensory awareness, problem solving, concept formation, physical/motor development, pre-literacy, and math skills, while being inclusive of children w/special needs.
  • Plans and implements appropriate, multilingual curriculum and environment.
  • Assesses children’s development, keep progress on each child enrolled in your program, as well as oversee progress records on all children enrolled in the classroom.
  • Works with staff and parents to develop strategies for potty learning and other developmental milestones.
  • Creates and maintains a supply ordering system within agency budget constraints for classroom and office needs.
  • Engages in reflective teaching practices with a teaching team practices which involves thoughtfully considering individual circumstances, development, and interests of children and incorporating this knowledge throughout the classroom.

Staff Relations

  • Supports all staff in their duties.
  • Maintains open and respectful communication to all staff.
  • Participates in the new staff orientation and review process for assistants and volunteers.
  • Supervises and instruct assistant teachers, and classroom volunteers.
  • Works cooperatively with other staff members, accepts supervision, and helps promote a positive atmosphere.
  • Serve on a team of early care and education professionals.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding co-workers.

Family Relations

  • Directs staff and parents to agency personnel who can provide information and referral to other agencies for additional services.
  • Involves parents in projects to improve program, and the overall classroom environment.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding families enrolled at the center.
  • Serves as lead person for assistants, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Conducts orientation for new parents to acquaint them with the program.
  • Initiates and lead activities that support the parent community, including parent meetings, conferences, home visits, and general support of parent/center relations.

NOTE: Essential Job Functions may be both on and off-site locations, days and/or evenings and/or weekends as well as overnight.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 6 units in Early Childhood Education and/or Child Development
  • Commitment to enrolling in a minimum 2 units of ECE/CD each semester until completion of 12 units including Child, Family, Community and Child Development as well as 3 units of infant/toddler development if in an infant/toddler program.
  • Current pediatric CPR and First Aid certification.
  • In good health and free of active Tuberculosis.
  • Must provide completed Health Screening Report, Immunizations and Department of Justice clearance prior to employment.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties effectively as described above.
  • Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population.
  • The skills and willingness to deal with sensitive family situations in a non-threatening and professional manner.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, assume postures in low levels to allow physical/visual contact with children and engage in physical activity with children.
  • Ability to effectively teach and supervise infants, toddlers, and preschool children.
  • Ability to see and hear well enough to keep children safe.
  • Ability to communicate well with adults and children of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including people with disabilities.
  • Ability to serve as a model teacher to students, parents, and community observers.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct classroom and outside activities.
  • Ability to be sensitive to all children in a multilingual classroom while modeling appropriate curriculum.
  • Able to reach a child 20-30 feet away in 30 seconds without danger to the staff person’s health.
  • Ability to meet or exceed the company’s attendance and punctuality standards.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a California Child Development Permit at the Associate Teacher level or 12 units in Early Childhood Education and/or Child Development including Child, Family, Community and Child Development
  • Associate Degree in Human Development, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field.
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with state-funded programs and special needs children.
  • Special curriculum development skill in a specific area.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the EDS Philosophy Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
