Systems Engineer

BASIC JOB FUNCTION: Under the general direction of the IT Manager, responsible for providing technical support in the procurement, installation, maintenance and ongoing support of the city’s data and voice processing systems, network, internet access and related peripherals and technologies. This is a systems administrator level position. We support 24/7 operations so on call availability is expected at times.

MAJOR DUTIES/AVERAGE FREQUENCY: ([E] = Essential task requirement)

95% [E] Provide direct computer support services to city personnel; including the install, configuration, troubleshooting and repair, replacement or refurbishing of computer hardware and related devices, software applications and connectivity to the City’s data, voice and special function servers.

5% [E] Monitor system operations and security of critical electronic data storage through the use of automated logs, performance charts and informational dashboards.

OUTPUT STANDARDS:

Quantity: Work should meet or exceed the output of work of comparable technical positions as measured in, but not limited to, timely installation of equipment and appropriate effort to insure proper and timely resolution of user problems and complaints.

Quality: Work should be consistent, timely, accurate, neat, thorough, and seldom need revision. Work product should demonstrate a thorough understanding of trouble shooting methodologies and the appropriate corrective tasks required. Efforts must be focused to insure timely resolution of problems, minimal system downtime and adherence to prescribed MIS standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/PERCENT OF TIME: ([E] = Essential task requirement)

60% (E) Ability to sit at a workspace and use a computer, telephone, and other communications technology to perform research, contact vendors, and process documents.

30% [E] Physical agility necessary to install and maintain computer and other office equipment weighing from 2 to 50 pounds. Requires working in tight spaces and working with electrical components and mechanical devices. Requires ability to climb ladders up to 10’.

10% (E) Mobility to travel between offices, departments, and city buildings at various locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Formal Education: Formal training in management information systems, including hardware, software and related areas. An associate or bachelor’s degree in information systems or related fields is required.

and Certifications: Proficiency in computer networking, hardware, software, and operating system installation and support.

Skills Required: Demonstrated knowledge of information technology, excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. Strong analytic and problem solving skills and the ability to install, maintain and support computer and related technologies. Patience, understanding, and strong customer service skills. Desire to learn systems and new technologies.

Required Technical Skills: Knowledge and familiarity with Active Directory, group policy, Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Office 365, and hardware, including workstations, laptops, and printers.

Desirable Technical Skills: Knowledge and familiarity with Windows 2012/2016/2019 Server, Office 365, VMWare ESXi 7, wireless (802.11) configuration and security practices, Microsoft SQL Server administration, basic networking proficiencies, IP camera management/installation, SIP/VOIP telephony

Experience: Prior experience required in installation and support of major operating systems, application software, office productivity software and computer hardware including workstations, printers and other data processing devices.

DEGREE OF CONTROL: This technical level position reports to the IT Director

SCOPE OF CONTACTS: Daily interaction and communication with department heads and city staff. Occasional communication with department heads and staff from other organizations engaged in technology sharing agreements or cooperative projects.

Pay: $67,100.80 - $85,675.20 per year
