POSITION CONCEPT
This position supervises the activities of the Service Area’s Distribution Design Technicians (DDTs), Distribution Design Engineers (DDEs) and Distribution Design Support Technicians (DDSTs) performing the design and engineering of additions and modifications to the distribution system. The Supervisor, Distribution Design is responsible for development and oversight of the engineering/construction designs to ensure applicable codes, regulatory requirements and company standards are met.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Throughout all aspects of the positions’ duties, ensure that all work is performed safely and according to Safe Work Practices.
- Supervise the daily operations of the DDTs, DDEs, DDSTs and administrative resources needed to plan, design and engineer $10 million (per annum) of additions and changes to the electrical distribution system that serves new and existing customers. These activities involve the application of sound engineering practice, ensuring applicable codes, regulatory requirements, proper financials, and company standards are met and balanced with the goals of the Distribution Design Team and Tampa Electric Company’s corporate objectives. Approve thousands of work requests, addressing customer priorities and in-service dates; verifying material and labor values, coordinatingand forecasting projects, and negotiating deliverable expectations.
- Mentor direct reports in negotiations, project management coordination, billing accuracy, engineering design, and construction aspects related to new and existing customer electrical loads impacting TEC’s distribution system. Provide development opportunities and job site assistance to complement the Distribution Design Technician Training Program. Administer the team member Performance Review, Individual Development Plan and Positive Discipline programs. Monitor and recommend promotional and associated salary increases. Facilitate goal alignment, team member engagement, and a free flow of information for team growth.
- Addresses customer and FPSC complaints from initial contact to problem resolution, involving company resources, such as assigned account representatives, as needed. Investigate and implement solutions. To mitigate customer complaints and ensure the existing electrical system meets the TEC distribution reliability standards, monitor system performance using visual and/or infrared patrols. Additionally, assist with claims investigations as needed.
- Conduct job hazard analyses and, as needed, coach employees to ensure they are in compliance with current safety procedures. Communicate safety expectations, recognize safety achievement and review safety statistics monthly. Support Safety Committee activities and Energy Delivery safety efforts.
- Provide direction for planning, coordination and optimization of resources utilized for TEC’s Electric Delivery Construction Program projects in assigned areas, Line Clearance and all planned (P3) distribution work. Coordinate on-going efforts and provide necessary changes when appropriate.
- Involve System Planning on projects related to future electrical system expansion and modifications, and participate and provide consultation in major load additions and projects of unusual nature such as relay service. Monitor the service area construction program and act as project leader as assigned. Provide input for budgeting capital construction projects.
- Manage cost center overtime and capital specific budget; review and approve team memberbusiness expenses. Provide input to the service area’s business plan and annual budget, including the tools, methods, and procedures. Identify, evaluate and develop new and existing technologies and strategies for process improvements, efficiencies and safety. Serve as back up to the Operations Manager in his/her absence related to Engineering or customer concerns and issues.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Required: Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
Preferred: Associates Degree in relevant field
Licenses/Certifications
Required: Valid Florida State Driver’s License with clean driving record
Experience
Required: Minimum of ten years distribution design work experience in progressively more complex technical assignments. Must have completed Levels I through V of the Distribution Design Technician training curriculum or equivalent training with another utility.
Preferred: Completion of TEC’s First Line Supervisory Training Classes or similar supervisory training and experience as a Lead DDT.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)
Required: Must have demonstrated ability to function successfully within the team environment with consistent demonstrated positive leadership, customer service and initiative skills and self-motivation to continue to learn.
Must have demonstrated ability in performing highly technical, complex assignments and designs with minimal direction.
Preferred: Familiarity with the Distribution Engineering Technical Manual (DETM), GIS, WorkPro, ToolKit, Pole Foreman, Energy Delivery Construction Program, General Rules & Specifications (GRS), Approved Materials Catalogue (AMC) and the Standard ElectricalService Requirements (SESR) is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Can expect to work a 10-hour day, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime to meet customer deadlines and storm response. Working conditions are both indoors & outdoors in varying weather conditions. The level of stress varies depending on work load and customer deadlines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
May be required to work in field conditions near energized electrical equipment, walk in rough terrain and lift objects up to 50 lbs., while wearing Fire Resistant clothing and Personal Protective Equipment as required per the Safe Work Practices manual.
