Job Description Summary
The home campus for this position is Mansfield.
The Associate Dean of Students is responsible for the triage and management of incidents in response to student issues of concern. This individual provides case management for issues that could impede student success and retention, including, but not limited to adjustment issues, mental health issues, issues of trauma, bias incidents, crisis and/or emergency situations, harassment and/or intimidation, academic and/or classroom issues, disruption to the community, and/or issues of personal safety and/or the safety of others.
The Associate Dean of Students is responsible for the triage and management of incidents in response to student issues of concern. This individual provides case management for issues that could impede student success and retention, including, but not limited to adjustment issues, mental health issues, issues of trauma, bias incidents, crisis and/or emergency situations, harassment and/or intimidation, academic and/or classroom issues, disruption to the community, and/or issues of personal safety and/or the safety of others.
The Associate Dean of Students will ensure that, when needed, students receive comprehensive wrap-around services that will serve to identify issues impacting persistence, while offering support as solutions are identified and implemented. This person provides guidance to students, or the parents, supporters, faculty and staff of a student who may be in crisis or an emergency situation. The incumbent will serve as a student advocate and an integral member of the CARE Team.
The Associate Dean of Students will coordinate student outreach programs designed to identify and address issues that could impede student success and retention. The Associate Dean of Students will support assessment initiatives and case management records for the Office of the Dean of Students.
The Associate Dean of Students will represent the Office of the Dean of Students while working collaboratively with key areas and partners on and off campus to identify and enhance ways to improve student support and retention. This individual will communicate and interact with internal and external stakeholders to support students.
The Associate Dean of Students may be asked to provide support to initiatives, programs, and other duties as assigned to the Office of the Dean of Students.
Essential Duties
Case Management
- Respond and provide assistance to students dealing with crisis, life trauma events, emergencies, and other situations
- Support students in their day to day and long-term issues and concerns which could be obstacles for success
- Assess and triage issues of concern and make referrals to appropriate campus and community resources
- Follow-up with students to determine level of success with referrals and/or need for additional resources or support
- Serve as a member of the CARE Team and coordinate student follow-ups and monitor student success
- Serve as a case manager and responder to students in crisis
- Serve as a resource or advocate for students involved in University processes
- Assists in monitoring incoming reports, referrals, and phone calls for the Office of the Dean of Students
- Serves as a member of the Dean of Students staff and actively participates in advocacy and outreach programs
- Will provide primary case management for their assigned campus, as well as support other campuses as needed
- Support the process of notification for faculty/staff for absences related to traumatic events, death in the family, etc. as needed
Records and Assessment
- Maintain case management records and assessment data
- Will be expected to maintain knowledge of best practices and innovative approaches related to students of concern, retention, and student success
- Maintain records associated with case management, including but not limited, to Starfish, Maxient, and Banner
Community Relationships
- Develop and maintain working relationships with on and off campus community members in the resolution of student issues and concern
- Develop and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Office of Residence Life team
- Manage the Dean of Students participation in New Student Orientation, Admission events, and university-wide programs
- Will be expected to serve on divisional or institutional committees
- Assist with the promotion of the available resources and services associated with the Office of the Dean of Students
- Collaborates and creates initiatives with others within the Dean of Students unit as well as other campus partners.
- Serve as a resource and advocate for commuter students
Programs and Initiatives
- Coordinate outreach programs as identified by the Senior Associate Dean of Students
- Participate in ongoing training and education for the Office of Residence Life staff and other student leaders related to case management and students of concern.
- Develop and implement a student training related to leadership or current area of concern
- Assist in the development of a student needs assessment and provide date for future program development
Specific Duties
Decision Making:
- Decision making will range from routine to crisis. In crisis/emergency situations the individual will need to make decisions as to whether the students’ need immediate attention and/or other type of resolution or whether a referral is appropriate.
This position will make recommendations to refer students of concern to the CARE Team or Threat Assessment Team as needed.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Assist with the supervision of students, graduate students, and interns as available.
- The Associate Dean of Students may serve In the absence of the Senior Associate Dean of Students.
Minimum Qualifications (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Master’s degree in higher education, social work, counseling or a related program required.
- Two years of experience supporting the needs of students within higher education, secondary education and/or non-profit youth development organizations.
- Demonstrated ability advocating for student needs with an understanding of and sensitivity to multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion.
- Demonstrated leadership, problem solving, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability collaborating with mental health or federal/state/county assistance agencies.
- Demonstrated experience in the design and development of programs.
- Understanding of and ability to work in a team environment that uses various collaborative technologies. (i.e. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Maxient, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
- Assist with the supervision of students, graduate students, and interns as available
- Knowledge of current issues, best practices, and assessment in higher education student services.
- Knowledge of legal, compliance, and higher education issues related to areas of responsibility.
- Leadership and supervision skills.
- Strong relational skills with students, faculty, staff; and ability to work collaboratively across multiple campuses.
- Ability to advocate for student needs clearly, concisely.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications

- Typical office environment; evenings and weekends required for visibility or response to emergencies.
- Knowledge or the ability to learn the operational policies and procedures of Commonwealth University.
- Experience with crisis intervention, support management, and risk management
