Department Marketing Statement

Residential & Community Living is responsible for the overall student life program in 8 residence halls and 8 apartment complexes (10,000+ residents) with a focus on student development and leadership programs, and conduct and accountability. In addition, R&CL is responsible for resident placement through the University & Community Housing Services Office.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Student Leadership Programs Manager is under the general direction of the Associate Director of Student Conduct & Leadership, the Student Leadership Program Manager is responsible for the development of the Resident Hall Association (RHA). Also provides leadership development for the Residence Hall staff (RD/ARD) in regards to hall government. The SLPM represents Residential & Community Living (as well as Housing & Residential Services) on campus wide committees with focus on Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), Spring Insight, Convocation, weekend programming, voter registration and other university-wide student programs as well as programs to promote academic recognition and support. This position collaborates with Office of Student Life, Business Services, and Risk Management so that residence hall programs meet the policies and mandates of the campus for safety, security and contract requirements. Advises all Residential & Community Living staff on the campus regulations and requirements Residential & Community Living programs produce a residential experience that insures the quality of life, well-being, and personal development for more than 5,700+ diverse students residing in eight residence hall communities operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These programs are produced, planned and implemented by residence halls staff and student leaders. These programs would include setting social, educational and recreational programming standards, training staff and students leaders to fulfill programming expectations, monitoring programming efforts and developing programming resources.

Required Qualifications

  • 1-3 years Related experience in student leadership programs
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling to effectively motivate others.
  • Strong service orientation with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

55% Supervision and Management of RHA

Serves as departmental advisor to the RHA Coordinating Board, which includes elected representatives from each of university-owned residence halls, and a 40 member elected executive board. Provides training, advice, guidance, leadership, direction and feedback to Board members as a large group, smaller work/focus groups and individually. Supervises 5 summer RHA interns Supervises two Student Leadership Coordinators. Coordinates job responsibilities for the SLC's to include: RHA program advising, training and development of elected student leaders, training of residence halls staff and management on Residential & Community Living social, educational, recreational and academic-support programs and services for residents. Trains Assistant Resident Director(s) in their duties as advisors to the 11 Hall Councils. Advises, and supervises where appropriate student group members in all areas of job responsibility recognizing the specific needs of individuals and positions. Works towards assisting group members in becoming goal-oriented, effective and productive in planning programs and activities, as well as fulfilling all responsibilities of the Residence Halls Association as outlined in the organization's Constitution and By-Laws and the future development of apartment government programs. Develops and implements activities that focus on group members working effectively as a team, as well as assist team members in resolving problems and conflicts. Plans for the training needs of RHA student leaders in all areas of responsibility and residence halls staff in the areas of programming and student leadership development. Plans creative and effective training programs that lead to a working understanding of job responsibilities; goal setting, planning, implementation and evaluation; team development; and organizational development. Custodian of expenditures and administration of the Residence Halls Association (approximately $250,000 annually) budget. Supervises the financial policies, to include the distribution of funds into floor, building and campus accounts according to RHA Constitution guidelines; Major Maintenance budget requests and expenditures; and fund-raising efforts. Works with the Business Services unit of Housing and Residential Services to establish policies and procedures for RHA funding and budget administration; trains staff and student leaders on accounting practices for RHA funds; and supervise, monitor and analyze expenditures. Supervises the set-up, operation and activities of the RHA office, to include the establishment of office procedures, office services and hours, and the purchase and maintenance of office supplies and equipment Advises the RHA Coordinating Board in their efforts to work with the residence halls associations at other universities in the western region's Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (PACURH) and the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH). This would include advising and supervising where appropriate the RHA National Communications Coordinator, advising RHA fund raising efforts (projects and activities designed to earn money to offset conference travel expenses), and advise group members' conference preparation, attendance and travel. Advises and supervises RHA events, programs and services across the three residential hubs (Channel Island 5, Manzanita/San Rafael and Santa Catalina). This would include the major programs that are sponsored by the RHA Coordinating Board, such as the annual Talent Show, Culture Fest, All-Hall Ball, etc. Also, advises and supervises other services offered by the Residence Halls Association, such as the management of Interest Rooms and RHA recreational facilities, Project CARE (Appeals Board and drawings), and RHA Website. The above includes extensive consultation and policy interpretation with University Business Services and Risk Management. Under the general direction of Assoc. Director, works to create an organizational plan for student government in res halls and apartments as the department grows.

25% Campus-wide Programing and Leadership

Coordinates departmental educational and academic support programming efforts for programs established and maintained by Residential & Community Living programs that include representatives from other university departments. Examples include coordinating the AIDS/Safer Sex Peers Program (recruitment, training and supervision and program development), Spring Insight, Convocation, academic advising programs (Letters and Science Advisors lunch program) and the Alcohol and Other Drug Task Force. Serve as a Residential & Community Living liaison and resource for programs, activities and services for other university departments and programs, e.g., Isla Vista community programs, STAR peers, Greeks, privately-owned residence halls, and ad-hoc and standing university committees and work groups.

20% Administrative Duties

Works in collaboration with Office of Student Life, Business Services on contracts and Risk Management regarding policy and procedures and ensure that Residential & Community Living staff implements policies and procedures. Develops staff and student leader manuals and resource materials: completes administrative tasks needed to assure an effective and efficient office and department. Completes administrative tasks and communication efforts as a member of the Lead Staff of Residential & Community Living. Kronos Supervisor responsible for auditing, correcting and approving career and student staff timecards to assure proper time reporting. Has working knowledge of personnel policies.
