Job Title: Structural Fitter and Welder

POSITION SUMMARY:

Primary responsibility for the Structural Fitter and Welder is to perform specialized duties involving welding and metal fabrication related to marine vessels, off-site and on-site, and in shop production areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Meeting the needs and desires of all customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Performing daily quality control checks and ensuring welding and fabricating meets the appropriate standards/codes.
  • Establishes and implements repair procedures on large and complex projects.
  • Work involves a wide range of skilled mechanical tasks and the use of specialized equipment and hand tools.
  • Must also be proficient in multiple welding processes such as: Arc welding (SMAW), metal inert glass (MIG) welding, tungsten inert glass (TIG) welding, flux-core welding (FCAW), oxygen/acetylene welding, and brazing.
  • The welder must also be proficient in plasma cutting, oxygen/acetylene cutting, air carbon-arc cutting, sheet metal cutting/bending, iron worker use. The types of metals used in the welding process vary due to application and may consist of the following: mild steel, pipe (specialty and galvanized), (T-1), aluminum, stainless steel, and brass.
  • Due to the majority of the work being performed on various types of vessels and equipment, there is a high potential for exposure to hazardous conditions; proper precautions and safety equipment (including fall-protection equipment) must be used.
  • May be required to develop time and material estimates for custom fabrication, new fitting, and modifications to existing equipment as required.
  • Must be able to properly interpret welding symbols and complete welding tasks as per blueprint specifications. This work must be completed in accordance with the latest codes, standards, and practices of the industry.
  • Responsible for work hazards and safety requirements of the welding and metal fabrication trade, including proper use of care of tools and equipment.

  • Comply with all OSHA, shipyard safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver license.
  • Travel may be required.
  • May be required to work more than the standard work week, including weekends.
  • Use necessary shop equipment to complete tasks such as appropriate welding equipment, drill press, band saw, chop saw, Iron worker, horizontal milling machine, and a variety of grinders
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.
