STAFF ATTORNEY/ACCREDITED REPRESENTATIVE- LOP

The Legal Orientation Program (LOP) is a program funded by the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) to educate detained immigrants about their rights and the immigration court process so that they can make informed decisions about their legal cases. Al Otro Lado is the LOP provider of the Imperial Regional Detention Facility located in Calexico, CA. The LOP Staff Attorney/Accredited Representative will work as part of Al Otro Lado’s US Based Advocacy team and will be based out of our Southern California Office (Los Angeles or San Diego). This is a hybrid position with frequent (2-4 times a month) travel to the detention center in Imperial, CA.

The LOP Staff Attorney/Accredited Representative will work with a team of four people to provide Legal Orientation Program ("LOP") services to noncitizens detained at the Imperial Regional Detention Facility through a hybrid model of remote and in person service.

The LOP Staff Attorney/Accredited Representative will work under the direct supervision of the LOP Supervisory Attorney in collaboration with colleagues and supervisors in the Los Angeles and San Diego offices.

JOB DUTIES

  • Conduct screening for client eligibility for services for internal or external referrals
  • Conduct general orientations, individual orientations, and pro se workshops with people detained at the Imperial Regional Detention Facility
  • Assist detained noncitizens with gathering required documentation and writing affidavits, as needed
  • Inform clients on the status of their cases
  • Refer clients to other services as needed
  • Provide administrative support for programs(s)
  • Maintain the database of client caseload
  • Follow organizational protocols for data management and reporting
  • Respect organizational confidentiality at all times
  • Assist with evaluation of direct reports
  • Other duties as needed

QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

  • JD from an accredited university for Staff Attorney designation or university degree for Accredited Representative designation
  • Either bar admission or current accreditation
  • Experience in broad areas of immigration law; preferred legal experience in a non-profit organization
  • Ability to reliably commute to the Imperial Regional Detention Facility approximately 2-4 times per month
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Fluency in Spanish and English, including the ability to communicate professionally and in writing in both languages
  • Self-directed and self-reliant, highly organized with strong attention to detail, flexible, innovative, able to quickly adapt to changing program needs as border policies change, and able to work in a fast-paced setting with limited resources
  • Adept at learning to use new technology platforms, as well as experience with and proficiency with Microsoft Office and in Google Suites programs such as Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Forms, and Zoom
  • Respectful of colleagues in a diverse workplace environment

All Al Otro Lado staff working directly with clients in a detained setting must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including with recommended boosters, and must follow strict COVID protocol while providing services, including by using a high-quality mask in the detention facility and by testing for COVID if experiencing any symptoms.

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary of $65,000-$80,000 DOE. The LOP Staff Attorney will be based out of Al Otro Lado’s office in either Los Angeles or San Diego. This position requires travel to the Imperial Regional Detention Facility. Remote work will be permissible for duties that do not involve direct, in-person meetings with clients at the detention centers.
