Job Summary:
The Staff Accountant will prepare workpapers and assist with the following key processes within the accounting department:
- Assist with the cash accounting and reconciliations process,
- Assist with the accounts payable process,
- Assist with the preparation of financial statements and footnotes in accordance with both Statutory and US GAAP.
Will assist with the preparation of journal entries and reconciliations for monthly and quarterly close and assist with the preparation of certain relevant internal controls for SOX compliance. This position will have the opportunity to interact with various areas and departments across the finance function with great long-term growth opportunities, including interaction with senior level management.
Major Responsibilities
- Assist with the cash accounting and reconciliation process, including:
- Assist with the preparation of certain regular journal entries to record cash transactions to the ledger,
- Assist with daily cash account monitoring, and
- Responsible for preparation of the monthly account reconciliation process
- Assist with the accounts payable processing, including:
- Assist with the preparation of certain regular journal entries to record expenses and payables transactions to the ledger,
- Assist in the quarterly close process, where necessary, including:
- Preparation of journal entries
- Statutory
- GAAP
- Corporate
- Assist with the preparation of certain Balance Sheet tie outs
- Assist in continuous process improvements, including identification and implementation of opportunities for process and control enhancements
- Assist in the preparation and related filing of:
- Annual Statutory Audited Financial Statements
- GAAP Consolidated Audited Financial Statements
- Assist with the annual internal and external audits, as well as DOI examinations as needed
- Assist with the preparation of other various regulatory and rating agency reporting requirements
- Perform other related duties as required, based on the changing goals and objectives of the department and organization
Required Qualifications:
- Fundamental understanding of accounting concepts
- Introductory level understanding of US GAAP
- Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to ‘think outside the box’ to improve processes
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
- Strong analytical capabilities and good organizational skills
- Motivated with ability to take initiative and manage competing priorities while consistently hitting deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and SharePoint
- Exposure to US Statutory accounting principles a plus
- Life insurance (reinsurance) experience, including statutory Bluebook reporting a plus
- US GAAP financial reporting and/or Life insurance accounting experience a plus
- Experience with statutory regulatory reporting software a plus
- Experience with BlackLine a plus
- Experience with NetSuite a plus
Required Education / Certifications
- BS or BA in Accounting or Finance preferred
- 2-5 years of accounting experience in public accounting or private sector
- Mathematics or other with equivalent accounting experience
- Candidate with CPA or MBA a plus

Norwalk, CT or Remote / Hybrid possible
Base salary/hourly rate range for this position in Connecticut is between $70,000 and $120,000. Please note that specific compensation decisions are based upon a variety of job-related factors as permitted by law, including geographic location, credentials, skills, education, training and experience.
