Basic Function

Responsible for instrumenting, installing, and testing engines, vehicles and fuels in a steady-state and transient dynamometer facility.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Modify and assemble complex prototype engines and vehicles
• Instrument vehicles and engines using advanced sensors and electronics
• Perform routine engine and vehicle maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks on modern diesel and gasoline engines and engine electronics
• Work with engineering staff to perform relatively complex laboratory analysis using sophisticated and advanced equipment and instrumentation
• Perform basic calibration and tuning tasks
• Observe safety rules, take action on hazards and report these items to Unit supervisor
• Perform relatively complex laboratory analyses and sampling tasks; use sophisticated equipment and instrumentation where necessary
• Prepare routine and/or non-routine reports; use computers routinely to assist in data collection
• Prepare test reports using computers to assist in data manipulation
• Install and operate production and prototype diesel and gasoline engines and vehicles in a dynamometer facility
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain sophisticated laboratory test equipment
• Program and execute test plans and engine test cycles using AVL Puma Open running on Windows-based PCs
• Maintain and manage fuel flow and air flow delivery and measurement devices to ensure high quality data generation
• Perform general dynamometer equipment maintenance to ensure the test cell is in full compliance with all safety, environmental and health regulations and procedures
• Fabricate parts using common machine tools, weld metals including aluminum, steel and stainless steel
• Assure work quantity and quality by strict adherence to methods and procedures
• Provide on-the-job training to less qualified employees as required by supervisor
• Appropriately document all research/support activities in accordance with policies
• May be required to travel to meetings, seminars, and to vendor offices
• Additional responsibilities include data entry, calibration of lab equipment, ordering and restocking of laboratory supplies, and general laboratory maintenance
• Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

• High School Degree or GED equivalent; two (2) years college or equivalent automotive technology or related science (i.e., electronics, computers) or competency
• Nine (9) years industrial research lab experience; familiar with standard laboratory practices
• Five (5) years of engine and vehicle build experience with a strong knowledge of industry-best safety practices preferred
• Experience with CAN tools, CAN protocols and vehicle data recorders preferred
• Knowledge of emissions drive cycles preferred
• Must be able to use power tools and delicate measuring and metering instruments
• Must be proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, and database functions in the Windows environment
• Must have the ability to read and comprehend published, handwritten and typewritten materials, company forms, blueprints, technical manuals and computer printouts
• Experience with AVL measurement devices preferred
• Must be familiar with standard dynamometer test facility (familiarity with 40 CFR Part 1065 processes preferred)
• Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
• Must have good interpersonal and communication skills
• Must be able to write technically
• Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
