Haskell’s Design & Consulting Team unites architecture, engineering, and consulting professionals from across industries and geographies. While some clients are looking for turnkey design-build or engineer-procure-construct projects, The Design & Consulting Team serves clients who need specialized, fee-for-service design or consulting projects. These types of projects allow our team to form a strong rapport with client teams, marshaling them as they grow and helping them address industry and market challenges. The Design & Consulting Team serves four primary markets: Government, primarily the Department of Defense, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Air and Army National Guard, and the U.S. Naval Facilities Command; Industrial, focusing on food and beverage, consumer products, and utilities; Civil Infrastructure; and Healthcare.
In this role, you will research new building products and advise staff on products and methods of selection and be responsible for the preparation of and writing of specifications primarily for architecturally led projects.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist Project Managers (PM) and Project Architects/Engineers (PA/PE) in the preparation of Project Manuals.
- Lead the specification effort for the architectural discipline (CSI Divisions 00 thru 14).
- Lead specification kick-off meetings with the PM and the PA/PE.
- Coordinate subsequent specification meetings with project teams as appropriate.
- Assist other team members in research of new materials/products/assemblies/systems.
- Participate in project quality events during Design Development and Construction Document phases.
- Assist in coordinating specifications with drawings for completeness.
- Confirm schedules for deliverables (interim and final) with project managers.
- Coordinate the inclusion of specifications from other disciplines in-house and third-party consultants.
- Prepare narratives and new or modified specifications for addenda.
- Lead the specification effort for the architectural discipline (CSI Divisions 00 thru 14).
- Assist Construction Contract Administrators (CCAs) and/or Project Directors in the preparation of new or modified specifications for revisions to the Contract.
- Maintain:
- Specification Software excluding DoD (Department of Defense) or VA (Veterans’ Administration) Specs:
- Manage/oversee the updating process.
- Specification Masters:
- Harmonize legacy content with content that comes with the Specification Software (MasterSpec and/or SpecLink).
- Improve content by seeking, gathering, and analyzing feedback from the field.
- Enhance the editing process by developing and optimizing links within the software.
- Construction Materials Library: Collect and curate objects that help to inform design decisions.
- Unique Subject Matter: Preserve history – and correlate with supporting documentation.
- Specification Relevance: Monitor developments in construction practices.
- Incorporate Lessons Learned and QIC (Quality Improvement Committee) team’s information into master specifications.
- Specification Software excluding DoD (Department of Defense) or VA (Veterans’ Administration) Specs:
- Assist the Quality Assurance Team in:
- Prioritizing and organizing periodic seminars on materials/products/assemblies.
- Identifying new company best practices for inclusion in Project Delivery Guidelines.
- Mentor Haskell team members in their growth as designers regarding specification development and its role as the other half of the “instruments of service” for FFS (Fee-for-Service) projects and as key component of design-build projects.
- Support improvements to in-house engineering specifications (process and format).
- Assist the Haskell Specification Council by contributing to its movement towards common practice (processes, formats, templates, and the like).
- Professional Development:
- Maintain active membership with the Construction Specification Institute.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications:
- CCS certification and/or CDT certification.
- Knowledge of Specification Software; MasterSpec Software, SpecLink, and/or SpecsIntact or ability to learn these master spec systems.
- Architectural license or 10+ years architectural design document experience.
- Previous specification writing, and/or extensive construction administration experience required.
- Good communication skills.
- Candidate should be computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office package.
Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.

Salary Range:
The base salary range for this position is $80,000-$180,000. The actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skill, experience, and location.
