Job Description

Media Relations Specialist

Success Academy’s Public Affairs team works to advance K-12 public education reform and student achievement nationally by deploying high-quality content across multiple media platforms and channels. This team develops best-in-class communications to ensure internal and external audiences are well informed on relevant academic and education reform issues as well as the exceptional achievements and joyful celebrations of Success Academy scholars and educators.

Reporting to the Head of Communications, the Media Relations Specialist will play a critical role in maintaining and expanding SA’s positive public reputation and advancing our advocacy and policy initiatives.

Key responsibilities include:

• Develop story ideas, pitches and press releases that showcase the incredible accomplishments, sense of community and experiences of our scholars, teachers, and parents.

• Draft opinion pieces, editorial board memos, speeches, and external presentations.

• Collaborate with a range of other departments (Advocacy, Schooling, Family Experience, Enrollment, Human Capital, etc.) to develop ideas and content to drive earned media;

• Develop and steward effective relationships with local and national media outlets; maintain targeted media lists;

• Respond effectively to media queries;

• Stay well-informed about all local and national public education issues as well as current legislative and non-legislative issues which may affect SA.

Basic Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree and 5-8 years of related work experience (public relations, communications, journalism or political roles) required, media experience on a political or issue advocacy campaign a plus;

• Energetic, highly motivated, personable self-starter with excellent writing skills

• Sense of humor, creative thinker, and team player

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven, collaborative environment where innovation is sought, prioritized and rewarded.
