Job Description

NAU currently seeks a Software Systems Engineer, Intermediate or Software Systems Engineer, Senior to participate in a multi-million-dollar research effort on North American supply chains and critical infrastructures. This work is engaging, inventive and consequential. The work involves designing, configuring, installing, testing, and maintaining operating systems, application software and system management tools, helps identify appropriate hardware and/or software to ensure computer system needs in support of the FEWSION project, a large interdisciplinary team leading data science research for strategic supply chains and related policy. Leads or participates in the obtainment, organization, analysis, and transformation of systems to ensure the highest levels of infrastructure availability and system operations. Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks. Participates in the design of information and operational support systems. Senior position serves as a lead presenter of proposed solutions through the use of visual representations to members of a team, including non-technology professionals.

Software Systems Engineer, Intermediate

Operating Systems - 25%

  • Install, configure, test, and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools.
  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency.
  • Monitors university information systems to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensures that system improvements are successfully implemented and monitored to increase efficiency.

Infrastructure - 25%

  • Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability.
  • Follows standard systems/infrastructure principles and guidelines to ensure university systems are protected.
  • Manages and updates IT system/infrastructure data to ensure access to accurate and timely information.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of appropriate handling of IT infrastructure administration information.

Application Performance - 25%

  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work to implement fixes.

Scientific Communication - 20%

  • Documents and communicates findings using written and verbal scientific presentation and publication methods.
  • Writes basic reports and communications to provide information.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned, including training, travel, and project management.

Operating Systems - 25%

  • Gathers, analyzes, and models various scenarios related to additions or modifications to university supported information systems to make recommendations for changes.
  • Ensures that system improvements are successfully implemented and monitored to increase efficiency.

Infrastructure - 25%

  • Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability.
  • Follows systems/infrastructure principles and guidelines to ensure university systems are protected.
  • Manages and updates IT system/infrastructure data to ensure access to accurate and timely information.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of appropriate handling of IT infrastructure administration information.

Application Performance - 25%

  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work to implement fixes.
  • Oversees coding, testing, documentation and implementation of software systems infrastructure.

Scientific Communication - 20%

  • Documents and communicates findings using written and verbal scientific presentation and publication methods.

Minimum Qualifications


Software Systems Engineer, Intermediate

  • High school degree, AND
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience;
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Software Systems Engineer, Senior

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, AND
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience; OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


Software Systems Engineer, Intermediate

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.

Software Systems Engineer, Senior

  • M.S. or higher in Computer Science or related field.

Background Information


Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Salary


Software Systems Engineer, Intermediate

Anticipated salary range is $72,445 to $90,556. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Software Systems Engineer, Senior

Anticipated salary range is $83,312 to $104,140. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


FLSA Status


This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Benefits


This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
