Buy Sod USA, a multi-state agribusiness company with sod farms in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Georgia is currently seeking to hire a motivated Full Time Equipment Operator III.

The Equipment Operator III safely operates and performs maintenance and upkeep of farm and farm machinery as needed on a daily basis. This position will specifically address irrigation and water schedules regularly.

Job Responsibilities

• Responsible for general machine maintenance such as greasing, changing blades, checking chain tensions, checking tire pressures, checking for worn bearings, checking fluid levels etc.

• Thoroughly clean/wash machines as needed to prevent cross contamination.
• Keeps the yard neat, clean and orderly and free of debris allowing for safe operation of equipment
• Performs day to day operations around the farm using a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, machetes, weed eater, etc.
• Carefully and properly flag pallets and big rolls as directed.
• Weigh pallets of sod and relay weights to Harvest Manager/Harvester Operator.
• Load sod for customers by hand and with forklift.
• Stages sod neatly in an accessible area with forklift.
• Must maintain a neat and clean working area regardless of location/machine.
• Assists with crew leadership as directed.

Production

• Understanding/execution of machine adjustment during mowing to maintain Buy Sod quality standards
• Helps diagnose equipment issues and determine appropriate maintenance work.
• Operate the net setter, staking netted fields as needed.
• Properly gauge planting rate and inform Farm Management of discrepancies.
• Under the direction of Farm Management, independently executes mowing plan consecutively until directed otherwise.
• Under the direction of Farm Management, independently creates/executes fertility plans and orders products as needed.
• Under the direction of Farm Management, independently creates/executes chemical plans and orders products as needed.
• Under the direction of Farm Management, independently run irrigation.

Harvest

• Maintains quality standards set by harvest manager to ensure all pallets are stacked neatly, all rolls are of good quality, and pallets are within weight range
• Understanding/execution of machine adjustments (cutting depth, down pressure, conveyor speed) during harvest to maintain Buy Sod quality standards.
• Independently determines quality sod during the harvest process and ensures all sod going on the pallet meets quality standards.

Position Requirements

• Must demonstrate ability to be a team player and build positive working relationships with others.
• 2-5 years’ experience in a similar role required.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• Valid State Driver’s License with clean driving record.
• Valid Pesticide License or ability to obtain within 60 days.
• Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession.
• Ability to communicate equipment issues and understand job assignments.
• Ability to discern what issues need to be brought to upper management.
• Must have the ability to work independently and complete tasks properly with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work flexible hours to include, but not limited to, early AM/PM, nights and weekends and hours that could fluctuate day-to-day.
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions required.
• Ability to lift, push, pull heavy materials (50+1bs) frequently.
• Additional pay available commensurate with education/experience.
