SOCIAL WORKER

Summary Description:
Wilkinsburg School District is a small urban public school with approximately 600 students in two schools. The Social Worker will service both Kelly Primary and Turner Intermediate Schools.

The Social Worker plans for, identifies, coordinates, and manages the provision of social services for students and their families. The Social Worker will also convene and facilitate meetings with area social services agencies. The Social Worker is a member of the Wilkinsburg Education Association (WEA) and reports directly to the Director of Special Education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Develop, recommend, and implement policies and procedures for the coordination and provision of social services.

· Provide a single point of contact within the school system to community providers.

· Respond to appropriate referrals from teachers, administrators, counselors, and parents.

· Together with district staff, students, parents, and guardians, develop service plans, identify service providers, arrange for the provision of services, and monitor the implementation of service plans.

· Act as the District’s Homeless Liaison and works with children and families experiencing homelessness.

· Serve as a member of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) upon completion of required training and attend SAP meetings and other meetings as assigned by administration.

· Maintain close relationships with the network of community social services providers.

· Prepare oral and written reports to submit to the School Principal and Director of Special Education.

· May be asked to present to the Board of Directors and the Superintendent.

· Identify outside funding sources for special projects.

· Prepare grant proposals for new and/or existing funding sources at the request of the Director of Special Education.

Related Services:

· Assist with home, school, and community problems in a child’s living situation that affect the child’s adjustment in school.

· Prepare a social or developmental history on a child with a disability or regular education student.

· Mobilize family, school, and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in the educational program.

· Assist in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.

· Assist in the development of a Student Attendance Improvement Plan.

Services to Students:

· Provide support to crisis intervention.

· Develop SEL intervention strategies to support an academic success.

· Assist with conflict resolution and anger management.

· Assist students to develop appropriate social interactions skills.

· Assist the child in understanding and accepting self and others.

· Provide support for around regular attendance and eliminating truancy.

Services to Parents/Guardians/Families:

· Work with parents to facilitate their support in their children’s school adjustment.

· Alleviate family stress to enable the child to function more effectively in the school and the community.

· Assist parents to access programs available to all students.

· Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources

· Assist parents with attendance issues related to school, focus on attendance applications, CYF, and court appearances.

· Provide parents with assistance for direct contact with agencies for student support/mental health.

· Review Student Attendance Improvement Plans with SAP and possibly parents.

· Provide parents with attendance data.

Services to School Personnel:

· Provide staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior.

· Assess students with mental health concerns.

· Develop and coordinate on-going staff professional development in related areas.

· Assist teachers with behavior management planning and implementation.

· Provide direct support to staff to address SEL concerns that are impacting student learning.

School-Community Liaison:

· Obtain and coordinate community resources to meet students’ needs.

· Advocate for new and improved community/school services to meet the needs of students and families.

· Represent the school at community events.

Services to the District:

· Assist in developing and implementing educational programs to address SEL and support student learning for all children.

· Develop alternative programs for truancy elimination and habitually truant students.

· Identify and report child abuse and neglect.

· Attend all SAP meetings within the district.

· Prepare oral and written reports to the as directed by the Special Education Director. May be asked to present reports to Board of Directors, the Superintendent, SAP Team, Director of Special Education, and the principals.

· Support Crisis Response teams in both buildings.

· Assist with the implementation of integrated services that support school safety and student learning through a school-wide multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS).

· Support the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program.

· Provide effective collection, evaluation, interpretation, and use of data for informed decision making around student social, emotional, and intellectual well-being.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

N/A

Education and Experience

Minimum Bachelor’s degree required. Experience in the delivery and management of social services, experience in a school (preferred) or healthcare environment, experience with program development and related activities.

Licensure

Must hold current, valid PA Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and maintain an active license status through completion of 30 hours of continuing education in each biennial period.

CLEARANCES

Must submit the following current clearances – less than 1 year old

Act 114 – FBI Clearance

Act 34 – Criminal Clearance

Act 151 – Child Abuse Clearances
