Position Overview
The Small Business Specialist (Community Programming Emphasis) is responsible for modeling excellent customer service to all staff and customers by providing outreach and training to the business community as well as library staff. This position also works within a team to continuously grow the Square One Small Business program.
Essential Functions
  • Community Programming liaison for the Square One Department and MCPL internal & external customers
    • Contribute to the development of programming activities, marketing materials and strategies
    • Plans, coordinates, and facilitates Square One workshops and other events
    • Provides one-on-one digital skills training to customers
    • Assists with planning and execution of department-led Library events
    • Conducts one-on-one sessions on library and business resources
    • Manages presenter paperwork and payments
    • Manages the department calendar for Square One programming
    • Helps coordinate grant-funded programming
    • Coordinates with other departments and branch staff on programming
    • Manages statistics and reporting for Square One programming
This position could potentially be the Social Media Liaison:
  • Social Media liaison for the Square One Department and MCPL internal & external customers
    • Creates and conducts classes/presentations to businesses and community partners on the Library’s business resources internally and externally
    • Creates and manages social media content, monthly e-blast and newsletter and videos for the department and resource partners
    • Creates digital promotional materials for special library events
    • Conducts one-on-one sessions on library and business resources
    • Manages scheduling application for Square One workshops
    • Works with the Marketing Department to create promotional materials
    • Maintains relevant knowledge of social media and software solutions
    • Trials and evaluates existing and potential online resources
    • Assists staff with business related inquiries from the public
Non-Essential Functions
  • Facilitates Square One programs as needed
  • Serves as the backup for any of the specialists for the Square One Department
  • Represents the Library by attending different business organizations meetings and events
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma/HiSet/GED Completion required
  • Some College courses preferred
  • Knowledge of social media, community programming, and event planning required
  • Demonstrated ability to speak to small and large groups

  • Remains current on industry and library trends for small business and workforce development support
  • Possesses the ability to identify, comprehend and apply best practices to support the library's small business and community programming

  • Intermediate knowledge of technology resources
  • Demonstrates computer literacy, proficiency in office productivity software and adequate keyboarding skills
  • Demonstrates skill in document and content creation, data entry, and manipulation
  • Demonstrates ability to learn and subsequently train staff, customers and community members on small business-related topics
  • Possess the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies

MVR Requirement
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle for use in carrying out the duties of this position including transportation of materials and equipment (mileage reimbursed).

Work Conditions
  • (Indoor) Works primarily indoors with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, and must have a reasonable tolerance for dust, mold, scents, allergens, and communicable diseases which enables the employee to handle library materials, work in older buildings and interact with coworkers and the public.
