New Mexico State University at Alamogordo (NMSU-A) is a comprehensive community college located in the foothills, at the base of the Sacramento Mountains. This vantage point overlooks the city of Alamogordo and the Tularosa Basin. The service area of the school includes Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB), White Sands Missile Range, and stretches beyond the view to include the Mescalero Apache Reservation and approximately twenty villages and towns. Much of the south-central New Mexico region benefits from the convenient location of the campus. NMSU-A is a two-year community college campus accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is dedicated to the concept of high-quality, cost-effective education that meets the needs of the community and diverse student population.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Helps business owners/managers to develop or improve their business knowledge and skills, to effectively manage the operations of their business.
Provides confidential, one-on-one advising and builds relationships with clients, in order to educate, mentor and advise clients in all areas of growing a business.
Adheres to the conduct policies of the SBDC program.
Works independently in a community located SBDC center, yet frequently collaborates with advisors across the state who request assistance on behalf of a client with need for specific expertise.
Has comprehensive knowledge and experience of small business operations from every sector of the local business community and provides a full range of business services.
Understands the client’s situation, analyzes issues and guides the client in developing a solution he or she is willing and able to implement.
Identifies a range of solutions, discusses the pros and cons of each and explains abstract concepts with real world examples.
Writes individual client write-ups or summaries required by contract and other periodic reports.
Seeks professional development opportunities to expand core competencies and stays abreast of industry trends, current events, and customers’ needs in the regional economic environment in all areas of business, including technology, necessary to start, grow, sustain, and transition a small business.

Peer collaboration is valued within the New Mexico SBDC Network and advisors often share their expertise in response to queries from other advisors. Advisors must develop and maintain a referral network within their local service areas to ensure they maintain a robust client caseload capable of delivering significant economic impacts to the local community and the state.

Performs significant outreach activities to engage the community through regular contact with Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development Councils, service clubs and community organizations and legislators in conjunction with the Lead Office staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Classification Summary
Performs a variety of financial/Bus management advisement, technical assistance, and related educational services to new and existing small businesses.
Classification Standard Duties
Provides direct technical assistance to small Bus clients in the research and development of business plans, marketing plans, loan proposals and related business development requirements. Evaluates business proposals together with client financial and business status to assess viability and bankability of proposals; advises clients as appropriate. Advises clients in micro and small business management practices, methods, and techniques. Provides advice and assistance in the establishment and maintenance of business and financial records and recordkeeping systems, in compliance with all relevant business, accounting, and taxation laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards. Participates in the development, promotion, coordination, and delivery of small business management training programs and workshops. Coordinates and/or participates in efforts to build relationships with area businesses to establish and develop contract training opportunities. Administers and monitors specific educational programs, as assigned, to include budget planning and expenditure management. Participates, as assigned, as a member of community groups and organizations to promote local business and economic development within the service area. Monitors operational activities and effectiveness of results, and prepares reports as appropriate. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge
Knowledge of the characteristics and prerequisites of a successful Bus loan proposal. Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of small business operations. Knowledge of basic business accounting. Knowledge of federal and state financial and tax regulations pertaining to small businesses.
Skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Records maintenance skills.
Abilities
Ability to develop basic Bus plans, marketing plans, financial strategies, and business loan proposals. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Required Experience
No previous work experience required.
Equivalency Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services. Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one-year full time equivalent experience in business consultation
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Loan packaging and underwriting experience
  • Professional and/or business ownership experience
Required Certification/License Special Requirements
Ability to travel within the SBDC service area,in-state and out-of-state to attend meetings and conferences.
