Shelter Advocate (week-day evening shifts 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM) Job at Transition House (Cambridge, MA)
Transition House is a Cambridge-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization working to prevent and end domestic violence. Transition House provides holistic support services, safe housing options, and education for adults and youth. Reporting to the Director of Housing Services, this position will be responsible for supporting the safety and self efficacy goals of survivors of domestic violence living in emergency shelter, as well as upkeep of the shelter.

This is a part time position. We are looking for a number of people for a variety of shifts, (mostly evenings 5-11 PM , nights 11 PM - 9 AM or weekend) hours.

Program Summary:
Transition House’s Emergency Shelter (ES) Program is a temporary emergency shelter program with supportive services for survivors of domestic violence. Under the supervision of the Shelter Coordinator, and the Director of Housing, the Shelter Advocate is responsible for providing trauma-informed support to survivors of domestic violence and their children in the emergency shelter. The Shelter Advocate works closely with other shelter staff members to offer and provide services for residents including intakes, advocacy, safety planning, educational and recreational activities, material assistance, and ongoing emotional support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for any issues that arise during shift, including: in-house issues, resident conflict resolution, and enforcement of Shelter guidelines, group living expectations, and program policies.
- Responsible for answering the 24/hour crisis hotline, and recording in a data system (EmpowerDB).
- Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the shelter facility, and adhering to emergency procedures.
- Complete all paperwork by the end of each shift.
- Complete facilities check for safety to ensure the safety and security of the shelter.
- Responsible for the cleanliness, and preparation of shelter rooms during the exit or entry of shelter clients.
- Email and inform Program staff about any maintenance issues that need addressing.
- Accurately maintaining a shift report log, and documenting any events during the shift.
- Provide individual advocacy and trauma informed support for residents on an as needed basis.
- Become familiar with benefits, housing authority, medical and legal resources in the Cambridge and Somerville area, as well as statewide resources for survivors of domestic violence.
- Attend required supervision, and staff meetings.
- Attend agency training, and events as appropriate.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Housing Programs.
Qualifications:
- Bilingual capacity is a strong plus.
- Must be self motivated, well-organized, punctual, and skilled at time-management.
- Ability to communicate effectively and creatively with adults and children of varying ages.
- Upholds the highest standards of accountability and professionalism with a commitment to excellence in all facets of program delivery.
- Ability to address conflict and contribute alternative solutions in a direct, constructive and positive manner.
- Experience with extremely marginalized people including individuals who are experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use, or domestic violence.
- Superior written and oral communication skills.
- High-level of comfort working within a diverse and multicultural environment.
- Ability to utilize critical thinking skills, exercise appropriate personal responsibility, and retain a positive outlook amidst challenging circumstances.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
- Proficient with technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Zoom, etc.
- CORI check required, though findings will not necessarily preclude hire.
Work Environment:
- Some exposure to emotional support animals.
- Regularly exposed to cleaning products, chemicals and solvent. Occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions.
- Routinely requires the ability to move supplies or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, while at times ascending or descending stairs.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $19.00 per hour
