About the Opportunity
The Senior Writer, Office of the Senior Vice President, Advancement, is responsible for executive correspondence on behalf of the President and Senior Vice President (SVP), Advancement, for constituents affiliated with the university as donors, parents, and partners. They will anticipate communication needs based on events and travel, propose communications as appropriate, and assist in drafting remarks for the President and SVP for advancement-related events and meetings.
The Writer will also oversee the presidential acknowledgement process in coordination with the Stewardship team and members of the SVP and president’s teams, including reviewing and editing presidential acknowledgements, condolences, congratulatory notes, and other related correspondence. They will assist the President and SVP in relationship management, donor cultivation, and prospect development by proposing and preparing correspondence with key donors and prospective donors.

The Writer will create and execute an internal communication plan to include a regular cadence of messaging on behalf of the SVP to the Advancement division, senior leadership, and other internal groups. They will partner across the university to assist in internal communications for the President as needed. Further, the Writer will regularly conduct and coordinate special research and writing projects on behalf of the President and Senior Vice President and conduct other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and four to six (4-6) years of experience writing in a professional environment, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in higher education or non-profit advancement communications preferred.
  • Highest level writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills with proven ability to write, edit, and organize ideas in a clear and stylistically apt manner with stringent attention to detail.
  • Flawless command of English language and grammar.

  • Exceptional people skills, professionalism, and a responsive customer-centric mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions on communications with high-level audiences.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Executive Correspondence/External Communication Management (40%)
  • Prepare drafts for daily correspondence on behalf of the President and Senior Vice President for constituents affiliated with the university as donors, parents, and partners, including responses and meeting follow-up.
  • Anticipate communication needs based on events and travel in partnership with SVP Team; review calendar and propose follow-up communications as appropriate.
  • Assist in drafting remarks for the President and SVP for advancement-related events and meetings. Conduct independent research to tailor messaging based on audience and program.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing board-related communiques in partnership with SVP Team.
  • Work with Advancement Communications team to review and make recommendations related to various marketing and communication pieces that feature the President and/or SVP.
Stewardship(30%)
  • Oversee presidential acknowledgement process in coordination with Stewardship team on behalf of the SVP Team. This includes reviewing and editing presidential acknowledgements, condolences, congratulatory notes, and other related correspondence.
  • Assist the SVP and President in relationship management, donor cultivation, and prospect development by proposing and preparing correspondence with key donors/prospective donors.
Internal Communication (20%)
  • Create and execute internal communication plan to include a regular cadence of preparing messages on behalf of the SVP to the Advancement division, senior leadership, and other internal groups.
  • Partner with President’s Office, Advancement, External Affairs, and other offices across the university to assist in internal communications for the President as needed.
Special Projects (10%)
  • Regularly conduct and coordinate special research and writing projects on behalf of the President and Senior Vice President
  • Other special writing projects as needed for special events may include board meetings or external speakers (such as commencement).
  • Other duties as assigned.
