The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Program Manager, Equine Protection for the Companion Animals department. The primary purpose of this position is to manage the programs and initiatives of the Equine Protection section of the Companion Animals department. Assists in advancing legal precedent in support of the organization’s goals.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading and managing assigned equine campaigns including developing campaign strategies, lobbying at the state and federal levels, working with regulatory agencies at the state and federal levels, and representing the organization at key meetings;
  • Developing organization’s messaging, goals, strategy and materials on equine issues, which includes drafting factsheets, background materials, organizational comments, testimony, press releases, action alerts, and other education and outreach materials;
  • Initiating, developing, and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including horse rescue groups, grassroots equine advocates. and leading experts in equine care and equestrian sports and activities;
  • Reviewing state equine legislation and regulations and evaluating their impact on organization-sponsored campaigns, legislation, initiatives, and ballot measures. Coordinating responses and developing communication materials with State Affairs staff;
  • Representing the organization, and presenting at conferences, stakeholder meetings, coalitions, and other venues;
  • Planning, promoting, and executing department fundraising events and collaborating with Philanthropy on fundraising for equine campaigns;
  • Serving as a spokesperson/presenter in communications with the media. Drafting messaging for media coverage, including articles, op-eds, letters to the editor, social media posts, and other assets.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Animal Science or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required;
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in public policy, advocacy, working with federal and/or state agencies, or another related field required. Experience in equine science and advocacy preferred;
  • Knowledge of legislative or regulatory processes;
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
  • Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Interpersonal and public speaking skills to build relationships, develop influence, and facilitate meetings; high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred;
  • Willing and able to travel and work a flexible schedule.

This position is based in the DC Metro Area – Remote Eligible.
