Senior HSES Advisor, Rio Tinto Closure

  • Provide HSES input into regional projects and sites and overall RT Closure HSES plan and improvement initiatives.

We are looking for a Senior HSES Advisor to support Closure sites and projects with the management of HSES risks, controls, processes, and systems.

This role will be closely working with Closure sites across the USA, Canada and Jamaica and is a great opportunity to provide technical HSES advice and resources to project teams including contractors to enable them to identify, manage and mitigate HSES risks across their activities.

Reporting to the RT Closure HSES Business Partner, you will:

  • Liaise with project teams about HSES needs and priorities; keep abreast of identified risks and mitigation actions for multiple sites and projects. Assist project teams with development of plans for new risks that are identified.
  • Responding to inquiries concerning management programs and issues from regulatory authorities
  • Lead the development and delivery of regional HSES training and in field coaching and mentoring programs, developing the implementation plan, the education materials, review and report the training activity.
  • Ensuring HSES management and emergency response plans and Risk Registers are developed, implemented and maintained.
  • Administer the HSES system to ensure quality, consistency, compliance and promote continuous improvement, while providing training and coaching to project and site personnel on HSES system and processes.
  • Review HSES related incidents and ensure they are reported in accordance with both internal and external requirements:
    • Coordinate and/or undertake investigations, ensure reports and investigations are timely and thorough, identify causes and clearly recommend actions arising, and follow up.
  • Oversee employee case management processes, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to address requirements (e.g. facilitating medical evaluations and establishing and coordinating return to work plans in liaison with relevant employees, medical specialists and the workplace) and ensure appropriate reporting is undertaken.
  • Extract HSE data; prepare reports and presentations for management reporting and metrics.
  • Develop a regional HSES assurance plan, contribute to the management of first line HSES assurance and compliance.
  • Provide technical support on implement contractor management standards and procedures to ensure contractors comply with Rio Tinto and statutory HSES standards and requirements, provide assistance with conducting contractor pre-qualification and performance audits, provide advice to project team and workplace/on-site collaboration to ensure contractors are effectively managed and comply with HSE standards and requirements.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Qualifications in relevant disciplines such as health, safety, environment and/or social sciences. Including additional experience and exposure to environmental compliance and management, mining, drilling, among others.
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Manage work across different time zones
  • Excellent project management, problem solving and organizational capability, as well as proficiency in in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience in SharePoint, PowerBI, and SAP would be beneficial.
  • Good HSE expertise applied to implementing HSE systems and processes in a complex operational environment, with field based and geographically dispersed workplaces.
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced environment managing competing priorities supporting multiple stakeholder groups with strong problem-solving skills (solutions-based mind set)
  • Well-developed skills in planning, developing, and delivering HSES training, coaching including the development of HSES training and educational materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership in HSE at a project level with the ability to provide oversight and guidance to peers and leaders.
  • Ability to work productively in a multi-language, cross-cultural environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel on a regular basis. (Adaptability and flexibility)

Where you will be working

Closure Group is a key part of Rio Tinto responsible from the evaluation and management of closed assets and also providing technical support to other product groups around the sustainable closure of assets through life cycle of mining.

Delivering the Closure projects require a collaborative and integrated approach to Health, Safety, Environment, and Security. Critical to success will be managing the intricate relationships and interfaces between contractors performing a range of high-risk work through civil activities, demolition, and rehabilitation.
