Summary
In an
independent and autonomous capacity, the Senior Grants Specialist (Pre-Award/Hybrid/Remote) will virtually assist Barry constituents with all facets of the research development and pre-award process. Will serve as Sponsored Project Official (SPO) for proposal submissions.
In a
team capacity, the Senior Grants Specialist (Pre-Award/Hybrid/Remote) will support other Grants & Sponsored Programs (GSP) staff as time and workload allows.
The ideal candidate will be service-oriented, have strong verbal/written communication skills, a positive “can do” attitude, and a passion for helping high-need, underrepresented students. The candidate will be detail-oriented, collegial, and patient in a deadline driven environment.
Due to the remote nature of the position, expertise with research development and proposal development is required. Previous experience in a higher education environment is preferred. CRA or CPRA certification is a plus.
Essential Functions

Research Development: Identify grants opportunities highly relevant to recruiting and retaining high-need students as well as supporting the needs of a Minority Serving Institution (MSI). Disseminate these opportunities to the university community. Recruit, identify and meet with university personnel interested in serving as Principal Investigators (PIs)/Project Directors (PDs). Assist PIs/PDs in bringing together a project team of both internal and external partners. These duties are largely of an independent and autonomous nature.

Proposal Development: Work with PIs/PDs and other project personnel to build proposal budgets, draft/review ancillary documents, edit/review technical documents, optimize proposal packages, and submit completed proposals per sponsor interface and guidelines. Serve as Sponsored Project Official (SPO) for assigned proposal submissions. These duties are largely of an independent and autonomous nature. Research Development: Meet with university personnel to identify sponsored program needs and assist in the identification of grants opportunities. Review media as well as sponsor sites/emails for the identification of targeted funding opportunities. Send these opportunities to interested parties and/or post on GSP media as appropriate. These duties will be largely independent and autonomous work.

Grant and Contract Negotiation: Assist GSP Director in reviewing contractual agreements for acceptance by the university. Negotiate with the Sponsor to remove unfavorable terms, complete internal paperwork, and route for acceptance by the legal department and for signature by those legally authorized to sign on behalf of the university. These duties are of an autonomous nature or of a teamwork nature, depending on the complexity of the contractual vehicle and current team workload.

Supervision/Mentorship/Training: Supervise interns and student workers, as assigned. Assist GSP Director in mentoring/training less experienced colleagues in research development and proposal development, as assigned. These duties are largely of an independent and autonomous nature.

Qualifications/Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in any related field of study is required

3-5 years in a financial, legal, or higher education setting with an associate’s degree may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree.

1-3 years minimum of work related experience is required.

Working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to use in varied situations.

Knowledge of standard grants practice, federal regulations, various sponsors’ proposal guidelines, and proposal submission websites (Research.gov, Grants.gov, etc.) is a plus.

Certification as a CRA/CPRA is a plus; however, it is not a requirement.

Possess an understanding of the grants process (preferably in a higher education setting), strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative. Attention to detail and organization skills are critical.

Follow internal procedures and manage multiple priorities simultaneously, all while meeting strict deadlines. Show tact, diplomacy, and helpfulness in interactions with internal and external stakeholders. Show discretion in dealing with sensitive and confidential information.

Possess high-level computer proficiency, with extensive experience using the Microsoft Office Suite. Previous experience with Workday is a plus.

Experience with electronic filing systems and the use of shared drives. Write memos, correspond with internal and external stakeholders over several media, answer phones, make copies, scan documents, etc.

Operate a computer, telephone, copier, and scanner.

Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to develop a well-written response to a funding opportunity. Possess stellar interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and constituents.

The Senior Grants Specialist is responsible for coordinating the grant opportunities presented to the Barry University Community and working on the development of projects to applications in support of; research, education, training, scholarships, professional development, travel, community outreach and equipment.
