Senior Compensation Consultant

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) seeks a Senior Compensation Consultant. This position consults with organizational leaders to identify and create compensation programs that align with business needs, assists in the development, implementation, and administration of campus wide compensation programs. The Senior Compensation Consultant provides high level expertise by anticipating needs, obstacles and demonstrates problem solving to achieve successful results. This is a team leader position with some indirect accountability for the work of others.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Internal Consulting: Consult with organizational leaders to identify and create compensation programs that align with business needs and provide recommendations for courses of action. Coach, counsel and assist campus leadership in understanding compensation theory and practice, applying both theory and practice to provide recommendations for courses of action. Provide consultative input on pay decisions and recommendations for salary and merit increases, and internal equity analysis.
  • Salary Administration: Assist in the development and oversight of salary administration processes (e.g., hiring, overcompensation, auditing, reporting, etc.) campus wide. Evaluate salary administration programs for salaried, hourly, middle, and top management positions, reviewing changes in wages and salaries for conformance to policy. Contribute to the development, implementation, and administration of compensation policies by recommending solutions or alternative actions to resolve compensation-related problems. Audit and evaluate positions (job analysis and evaluation) and apply individual classifications according to State and University policy. Coach and train lower-level Analysts regarding appropriate application of internal equity, market pricing, job analysis, trend analysis and metric development, reporting, salary adjustments, FLSA and other regulatory issues, etc.
  • Project Management: Support compensation related campus-wide initiatives including the planning, development and implementation and maintenance of resulting programs (e.g., establishment of the professional job model/hierarchy). Research, monitor and make recommendations for unit process improvements (including securing automated systems, revision of policies and procedures, etc.). Lead and conduct “special projects” and assignments.
  • Collective Bargaining Support: Assist in the development of collective bargaining strategy for compensation, support union negotiations by conducting cost analysis and funding models, performing job pricing, and making recommendations for appropriate course of action. Assist as a member of the collective bargaining management team.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration or related field.
Five (5) or more years of progressive compensation experience.
Working knowledge of the regulatory environment that governs compensation (e.g., FLSA, ADA, EEO, Illinois Wage and Hour, etc.).
Knowledge and experience in strategic and business planning, cost-benefit analysis, and process improvement related activities.
Working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of Office products (e.g., PowerPoint and Access) with advanced knowledge of Excel and Word.
Advanced analytical skills for data management and scenario modeling to facilitate planning.
Self-directed with strong problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to work in ambiguous situations effectively and interact effectively with senior leaders, managers, and line employees.

Preferred Qualifications:
CCP or PHR certification preferred.
Experience working in an academic organization preferred.
