Position Description
ERT is seeking a Scientific Software Programmer to provide expertise in programming support to researchers at the AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory) in Albuquerque, NM. Candidates should have an intricate understanding of scientific research to deliver mission-impact and high-quality software-based decision-aid tools. The position will require working closely with AFRL ionospheric researchers to develop and model the variability of the ionosphere and quantitively assess its impacts on RF propagation. The Scientific Programmer will directly collaborate with senior university and government researchers to achieve the desired science modeling and implement necessary numerical analysis code in production-quality to be transitioned to missions owners. Responsibility will include writing code, running code, testing code reliability, and performance, identifying problems, and interpreting results for verification purposes in collaboration with AFRL researchers.
Required Skills
- 2+ years of experience in building software-intensive physics-based models.
- Must be comfortable developing low-level numerical computation code in C/C++ and Fortran in Linux
- The ability to thrive in fast-paced environments and to strive for uncertainties in Research and Development is a must.
- Must have solid software development and communication skills to both independently accomplish the work and collaborate with the researchers and other developers.
- A mindset of ownership and pride in craftsmanship in software engineering is needed, along with a profound understanding of Agile and DevOps methods.
Must be a US Citizen and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a DoD Secret clearance to access applicable government facilities and systems.
Desired
- Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance or equivalent
- Experience or background in space weather science or ionosphere highly desirable
- Past experience in a research and development environment very helpful
- Knowledge of information assurance practices in DoD security a plus
- Data science and Machine Learning skills a plus
- Experience building or using container-based CI/CD pipeline in AWSGovCloud desired
- Expertise in make-based build tool and git for large-scale and distributed software development desired
Education
BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, and related discipline, or equivalent. Master's degree or PhD preferred.
Location
Work can be performed remotely with limited travel to Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, NM.
