Job Description

JOB GOAL:To work with students and specialized groups through the professional application of social work practice in the treatment of social/emotional and mental health conditions that may inhibit a student’s academic progress. To consistently collaborate with families of students enrolled in the Therapeutic Learning Classroom and provide individual and group counseling to designated students with disabilities as per IEPs.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Teaches a Therapeutic Support class (based on social-emotional curriculum) to students in the TLC Classroom
2.Develop measurable goals and objectives which address students’ emotional needs
3.Provide strategies, support and resources to help teachers manage issues in the classroom (student issues, group dynamics, social/emotional, etc.)
4.Attend IEP meetings and provide evidence of student progress towards goals and objectives
5.Provide individual and group counseling to designated students with disabilities as per IEPs
6.Communicates effectively and appropriately with families
7.Create and assist with developmentally appropriate positive behavior intervention systems for programs and individual students
8.Consults on a regular basis with classroom teachers regarding students
9.Collaborate with outside agencies to support the needs of students
10.Maintain comprehensive records of student progress (clinical notes)
11.Maintain ongoing relationship with various social agencies withing the community and make referrals as needed
12.Works closely with students who are considered at risk and, with parent/guardian explicit approval, makes appropriate referrals to community resources as needed or requested.
13.Serves as a member of the High School Crisis Response Team.
14.Assists the administration with students who avoid attending school due to social and/or emotional reasons.
15.Collaborates and consults with the Office of Special Education & Student Services and offers direct services as needed.

16.Makes home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information on a student’s background or for provision of direct services to the student and/or family in a crisis situation.
17.Offers group counseling and social groups as may be needed and/or appropriate.
18.Provides direct short term/crisis counseling services for students and/or their families for a variety of social, emotional, behavioral, and familial issues.
19.Acts as liaison with outside agencies and independent practitioners.
20.Assists with support services within the school and community should a tragedy occur.
21.Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about the student as is expected of a fully licensed teacher/professional.
22.Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
23.Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
24.Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
25.Performs related duties as directed by the Principal.

Job Requirements

  • QUALIFICATIONS:1. Massachusetts Certification as a School Adjustment Counselor/Social Worker required
    2. Massachusetts *** LCSW or LMHC required
    3. Experience as a School Adjustment/Guidance Counselor preferred
    4. Ability to work effectively with adults and students
    5. Good communications and interpersonal skills

    TERMS OF: In accordance with the existing bargaining agreement with the Somerset
    EMPLOYMENTTeacher Bargaining Unit

    SALARY/Work Year: In accordance with the existing bargaining agreement with the Somerset Teachers Bargaining Unit.
