Job Description
The Resource Conservation District of Tehama County is hiring a Conservation Technician (Field Work)
The Conservation Technician reports to the Project Manager and/or a Lead Conservation Technician and is responsible for the successful implementation of resource conservation projects that the District may undertake under contract with various agencies, organizations, and individuals. Pay range will be $17 to $25 DOE, with the higher end of the pay scale targeted towards applicants with a valid Class A CDL, faller certification, some supervisory experience, a pesticide applicators license or other certifications or advanced skills.
DUTIES
1. Responsible for performing necessary efforts leading to the successful completion of fuels reduction projects, creation of residential defensible space, roadside fuels reduction, mitigation site irrigation, re-vegetation, restoration, herbicide spraying, equipment operation, erosion control and other outdoor manual labor type projects undertaken by the District.
2. Record accurate data, complete, neat and detailed paperwork documenting work done on projects; report this data to the Project Manager and Accountant.
3. Assist Project Manager and Lead Conservation Technician in preparation for assigned project work, i.e. attending project site visits, gathering necessary project site information, taking notes at project meetings and processing answers to any questions.
4. Assist in overseeing work performed by inmate crews, CCCs or other outside contractors/subcontractors.
5. Responsible for being objective about the work being done and to offer suggestions for improvements or changes as needed.
6. Responsible for in-field and day-to-day operation and assisting with basic maintenance of RCDTC vehicles, field equipment and hand tools. Assure all tools are in good working order, load tools and supplies for the day's needs, fuel up vehicles and equipment. Maintain shop space in a clean, safe, efficient manner.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and ability is qualifying. Knowledge of landscape maintenance, landscape planting, irrigation systems, plant species, soil erosion control, wildfire fuels removal, forest practices, residential defensible space, equipment operation, and roadside traffic safety and control practices preferred. Understanding of, and ability to assist with application of herbicides is highly desirable.
2. Mechanical aptitude desirable.
3. Knowledge of landscape equipment, weedeaters, chain saws, pole saws and hand tools and basic equipment operation. Demonstrated ability to operate and maneuver a pickup truck towing a trailer or water tank trailer on highways and roadsides is required. Ability to operate and tow a brush chipper. Ability to operate a skid steer with mower and masticator head desirable. Ability to operate a E60 Bobcat excavator with masticator head desirable.
4. Ability to perform hard physical labor, outdoors in rugged terrain and the varying extremes of weather typically expected for the northern Sacramento Valley. Have little to no reaction to poison oak. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Knowledge of local Tehama County area and geography is desirable.
5. Self-motivated and resourceful. Reliable, show up at work on time and as scheduled.
Ability to work independently, without direct supervision and solve basic problems which may arise.
6. Ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees, private landowners, as well as local, state and federal agency personnel, and CalFire adult prison inmate crews.
7. Ability to read basic maps and identify work areas and access points. Knowledge of the local Tehama County rural and wildland areas is a plus.
8. Basic computer skills are necessary as project reporting is done electronically. Use email, use the internet, record data in pre-prepared Excel worksheets and Word documents, use a tablet in the field for taking photos of work and recording data, use basic GPS mapping software to record areas where work is done.
9. Ability to pass a drug screening test and background check, possession of a valid driver's license (Class A highly desirable but not required), and good driving record and proof of insurance (in a case where travel in a personal vehicle is required).
Position is full-time. Hours would be weekdays, usually four 10-hour days depending on the project being worked; sometimes five 8-hour days or there is some flexibility with which days of the week and start and ending times. Evening or weekend work may be required, dependent on project timelines and staffing requirements. Local (Tehama County and occasional Shasta County) daily travel will be required. Travel will be driving a District vehicle or, should the occasional use of a personal car be required, mileage is reimbursed at current IRS rates. A variety of outdoor manual field work will be the majority of the job and the ability to work in uneven terrain and along highway roadsides in varying weather conditions including 100+ temperatures, rain or snow is required. Exposure to poison oak is probable so a high tolerance is preferable.

Salary: Starting wage $17 to $25. Pay scale depends on experience and qualifications. If the applicant is in possession of a Class A CDL or a valid pesticide applicators license, Faller cert, substantial experience operating mastication equipment, or other useful job appropriate certifications, advanced skills or training, a starting wage that is upwards on the scale will be appropriate.
