OFFICE PROFILE:
The Division of Student Affairs has the responsibility of overall supervision of student life, student services and
activities, including residence, health, advising, recreational programs and all activities related to student
enrollment and retention.
ROLE:
Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Students, the Resident Director has shared responsibility for the
selection, training, and evaluation, and sole responsibility for the supervision of up to 9 Resident Assistants (RA's) in
a residence hall community of up to 280 primarily returning residents. Job duties also include providing after-hours
duty coverage and responding to emergencies for the entire residential community of up to 1,024; counseling and
referring students (individually and in groups); oversight in judicial matters; committee work within Residential
Education and Services and with other Concordia offices; and working cooperatively with other campus
departments such as Campus Safety and Security, Admissions, Dining Services, the Wellness Center, and the Center
for Student Leadership and Development. As a part of a team, he/she assists the Director and the Residential
Education and Services team in the overall Residential Education and Services departmental operation.
The Resident Director, in conjunction with the entire Residential Education and Services staff, aids in the
development of a strong residential community and promotes student academic and social success, student
wellness, student leadership, student spiritual development and diversity awareness with a special emphasis in the
management and administration of one residence hall area and oversight of departmental hiring and training.
This is a full-time, 12-month position. Although the majority of the position will function as described in the job
description and performance programs, some aspects are subject to change due to evolving departmental needs.
All activities coming of this position are to make a significant contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the
university.
STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Associate Dean of Students
Works closely with: Director of Campus & Residential Services, other Resident Directors, Director of First -Year
Experience Programs & Initiatives, Department of Campus Safety and Security, Director of Student Leadership
and Development, the Wellness Center, Executive Vice President /Chief Enrollment Officer, and Executive
Director of University Services, and other University entities involved in residential education and services.
Provides direct supervision for up to 9 Resident Assistants (RA's)
Interact and function cooperatively with other campus personnel
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily:
Section A: Student Staff Supervision
1. Select, train, supervise and evaluate up to 9 Resident Assistants.
2. Assist in annual RA recruitment and selection process.
3. Assist in the provision of fall training as well as in-service training throughout the academic year.
4. Foster unity and teamwork through training, weekly meetings and personal contact with the RA staff.
5. Regularly meet with RA's for one on ones and staff meetings. Serve as the primary contact for personal, academic and paraprofessional support.
Section B: CU Active & Desk Attendant Student Staff Supervison
1. Select, train, supervise and evaluate CU Active and Desk Attendant workers.
2. Conduct regular staff meetings with CU Active staff.
3. Stock CU Active with all necessary materials.
4. Schedule CU Active/ Desk Attendant hours and oversee student timesheet submissions.
5. Hold CU Active/ Desk Attendant staff accountable for all job responsibilities.
Section C: Case Manager
1. Enter all records into the Behavioral Intervention Team event management system.
2. Support ACC members by providing access to the individual student intervention plan assisting committee members with the implementation and follow-up of those plans.
3. Intervene and counsel residents on behavioral, emotional, health and safety issues and make appropriate referrals to on- and off- campus entities; counsel individuals and/or groups regarding personal and/or academic needs and university policy.
4. Research and implement risk management tools and inventories.
Section C: Community Management & Relations
1. Manage the overall operation of the Sigma Residence Halls including lounges, programming spaces, laundry room and barbeques.
2. Provide daytime, evening and weekend on-call coverage, including holidays, for emergency response to residence hall incidents in rotation with other Resident Directors. While on duty, be within 15 minutes of campus to respond to crisis and emergency situations.
3. Respond to emergencies including safety and security issues, student crises, physical plant problems and programmatic concerns.
4. Interpret and apply University and Residential Education and Services policies.
5. Serve as one of the student conduct hearing officers for the department.
6. Hold RA's accountable for periodic health and safety room checks and daily duty rounds.
7. Assist with Housing Services needs, including the preparation of the buildings for move-in and move-out and communication of building service requests.
Section D: Counseling & Advising
1. Intervene and counsel residents on behavioral, emotional, health and safety issues and make appropriate referrals to on- and off- campus entities
2. Intervene, counsel and advise students in personal conflicts
3. Serve as contact and/or mediator for roommate conflicts, advise students on room change and contract cancellation policies and procedures, and facilitate roommate/apartment changes in conjunction with the Coordinator of Housing Services
4. Counsel individuals and/or groups regarding personal and/or academic needs and university policy.
Section E: Administration
1. Serve on the Residential Education and Services management team and attend weekly meetings.
2. Attend monthly University staff and Student Affairs Division meetings and Student Affairs staff retreats.
3. Meet 1-1 bi-weekly with supervisor.
4. Participate on various intra and inter departmental and campus committees and work groups.
5. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Required to live on site in a two bedroom apartment. Required to share night, weekend and holiday duty. Serves
as an emergency response person for an entire living community of 1,092 residents. Must be willing to work
occasional evenings, nights, weekends and/or alternate work schedule. Must be present during all staff training
periods and for the opening and closing of the residence halls.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 1-2 years' experience working in housing or residential life in a college/university community setting; Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university required; Master's degree in College Student Affairs, Administration, Counseling, or related field preferred; Experience working in a Christian liberal arts institution desirable.
