What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Applied and Fundamental Physics Group (P-2) at LANL is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in nuclear physics beyond the Standard Model, neutrinos, dark matter, weapons physics, plasma physics, and fluid dynamics. We support a diverse program that includes scientists of many nationalities, participation in experiments worldwide, sponsorship of workshops and conferences, and classified experiments and analysis.

The Operations team in P-2 (Fundamental and Applied Physics) is seeking qualified research technologist applicants to support the beamline technical capabilities in the Lujan Neutron Scattering Center (Lujan Center) and the Weapons Neutron Research (WNR) experimental facilities. Additionally, the team supports the design, fielding, and execution of experiments conducted at the Lujan Center and the WNR. Both of these experimental facilities are located at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and provide neutron and proton beams to internal and external users.

Research Technologist, Level 1 ($81,700 - $133,100)

Responsibilities will include installation, maintenance and repairs to complex equipment and mechanical systems. Work will take place within a multidisciplinary team, supporting wide variety of experimental capabilities at the Lujan Center and WNR user facilities.

Research Technologist, Level 2 ($90,000 - $147,100)

In addition to what was outlined at Level 1, a candidate at Level 2 will also possess some of the qualifications listed below, including demonstrated experience in machining, work planning, and technical leadership.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Research Technologist, Level 1:
  • Experience working both independently and with a team while maintaining a strong work ethic and timely completion of work. Demonstrated commitment to safety in the workplace.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal team members and collaborators including engineers and scientists.
  • Working knowledge of machining a variety of materials with lathes, mills, drill presses, saws, and welding.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision, and exercise personal initiative.
  • Experience in executing Mechanical Material Handling operations.

Additional Requirements for Research Technologist, Level 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated ability to independently create or initiate new designs.
  • Demonstrated experience to manage/lead multiple concurrent tasks with changing programmatic priorities.
  • Experience performing assembly/disassembly of radiation shielding packages, maintenance, and repairs on complex mechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of work planning and execution.
  • Supervising experience in safely executing complex Mechanical Material Handling moves.

Education/Experience at lower level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Advanced experience operating heavy equipment including forklifts and overhead cranes (Qualified Operator).
  • Ability to design and fabricate parts with a quick turnaround.
  • Experience troubleshooting vacuum/pressure systems and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of hazard analysis, safety documents and work procedures.
  • Experience with optical tooling and alignment.
Location: The position is physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
