Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):
Learning and putting into practice techniques for determining the chemical durability of glass and glass ceramic objects. We are looking for someone to perform laboratory work at ~80% and desk work comprising the balance of time. The successful candidate will learn to use analytical equipment and will be responsible for reporting their work to other scientists.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Performing scripted tests and procedures in the Chemical Durability Laboratory under the guidance of an experienced scientist.
• Learning the procedures, putting them into practice, and comparing data from those obtained at earlier dates, plotting the data in Excel or Minitab, and presenting the data when called upon, and filing reports into Corning’s electronic system (LIMS).

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

• We require a BA/BS in chemistry, geology, chemical engineering, or biology.
• Experience is not required but is preferred.

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

• Ability to perform mathematical computations
• Evidence of work in a laboratory setting
• A strong understanding of chemical principles and their application to practical analytical work
• Ability to use software (e.g., Excel, Minitab, etc.)
• Understanding and practice of safety
• Ability to work in a busy, crowded laboratory and get along with other scientists.

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

• Working knowledge of statistics.

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

• Ability to present data to a team of people
• Ability to solve complex problems in a team environment.
