Role Overview:
Our mission as a global animal livestock genetics leader is to be an innovative and preferred partner in emerging agriculture livestock technology focusing on animal health and welfare that provides benefits to farmers, consumers, and the environment. We are recruiting a Research Scientist to lead the IVF Team, with the key function of identification, development, and coordination of research projects that lead to innovative, cutting-edge embryo and ART technologies that will ultimately advance livestock genetic improvement. This position is expected to work with other Scientists and staff within the Reproductive Biology research team as well as working collaboratively with other Genus teams (for example, ABS commercial IVF labs, ABS Product Development, and R&D Trait Development, Genome Science, Bio-Engineering, and Data Science) and external collaborators.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Research Scientist will work closely with the Reproductive Biology Director to identify research projects that will lead to improved in vitro embryo production, including the identification and development of new media and technologies, and potential collaborators.
  • The Research Scientist will develop reports for identified projects, both within Reproductive Biology and across teams, including assessment of the feasibility and impact of the research project, estimation of project timelines, milestones, and budgets, and evaluation of development costs and economic impacts. In addition, this position will prepare and present progress reports of these projects to Genus leadership.
  • The Research Scientist will work collaboratively with other Reproductive Biology Team Leaders as well as Scientists across the R&D team to advance the mission of Genus.
  • The Research Scientist will develop, finalize, and present posters and presentations at internal and external scientific seminars and conferences, and assist the Director with presentations.
  • The Research Scientist will provide knowledge and technical support for other scientists and embryologists in reproduction and related areas, and training as needed.
  • The Research Scientist will collect, summarize, statistically analyze, prepare, and publish scientific data internally and in peer reviewed journals.
  • The Research Scientist will ensure that the image of Genus R&D remains professional at all times and will maintain professional verbal and written communications with co-workers, internal and external collaborators, and vendors.
  • The Research Scientist will actively work with the Project Manager and Genus R&D team in the decision-making process for Reproductive Biology research projects.
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
  • Advance Degree (PhD) in Animal Science, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Veterinary Science, or relevant field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years post PhD experience developing and leading independent research in an academic or commercial environment, focused on the study of in vitro embryo production.
  • Experience training and managing team members.
  • Demonstrated expertise in independent scientific endeavors, including publications in peer-reviewed journals, participation in scientific societies, and collaborative research.

Knowledge/Skills:
  • An in depth understanding of oocyte and pre-implantation embryo physiology, and assisted reproductive technologies
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills
  • Knowledge of all aspects of IVF laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated ability to implement research plans and achieve results
  • An understanding of the commercial dairy, beef, and porcine industries
  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing, presenting, and publishing scientific data
  • Excels at interpersonal relationships, with a positive attitude towards others
