Primary Purpose of the Position:
This position serves as the primary administrator of the historical marker program. The position reports to the supervisor in the Historical Research Office.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responding promptly to extensive requests from the public (via phone, email, web portal, and social media) regarding potential marker topics, how to apply for markers, the history of existing markers, and damage to markers.
- Seeking accident reports when markers are reported damaged or missing, and pursuing insurance claims when possible.
- Coordinating the advisory committee of ten history professors and inviting new members each year.
- Organizing two advisory committee meetings per year (and conduction meetings according to public meetings law) and preparing application packets.
- Conducting research related to applications and assisting applicants with primary and secondary sources.
- Maintaining consistent and timely correspondence with program partners in NCDOT.
- Maintaining files, databases, and website.
- Managing the program’s $100,000 annual budget and payment of invoices.
- Public speaking at marker dedications around the state (in-state travel required).
