As an Advanced Machining Research Engineer, you will work with a group of researchers and scientists in cutting edge manufacturing process development. The goals of this position include conducting research, development, optimization, and deployment of innovative machining processes that extend the range of producibility of novel product designs. Roles and Responsibilities
- Apply analytical and experimental skills to design, optimize, and test next generation manufacturing processes, including, conventional (turning, milling) and non-conventional (ECM, EDM, Chem Milling, Laser processing) machining processes for shaping, machining, and finishing metals, ceramics, and composite materials.
- Work with GE Research and GE business teams to identify customer requirements and define manufacturing process specifications.
- Work with GE Research team to build hardware and software system prototypes to meet customer requirements.
- Follow a manufacturing readiness level scorecard to drive the manufacturing process development from benchtop testing through factory pilot implementation.
- Develop tools and methods to enhance machining process capabilities, considering cost, schedule, and quality trade-offs.
- Help develop diagnostics and monitoring strategies to enhance process robustness.
- Participate in the development of technology strategy and implementation of actionable multi-generational technology plans for manufacturing.
- Formulate plans for assigned projects and work with leadership and customers to track progress toward project deliverables.
- Effectively document and communicate results by preparing written reports and delivering oral presentations.
Required Qualifications
- MS degree in Engineering, Physics, or related fields with at least 2 years of industrial experience in manufacturing process development.
- Experience in materials removal process development and implementation with hands-on experience in 2 or more conventional or non-conventional machining processes (milling, turning, ECM, EDM, laser processes).
- Expertise in numerical control and tool path development.
- Knowledge of solid modeling and exposure to one or more commercial CAD/CAM systems, e.g., NX, Solidworks.
- Demonstrated experience in software development using languages, such as C#, C++, Python, LabVIEW, and/or MATLAB.
- Demonstrated innovation, self-motivation, and ability to perform analytical and laboratory research work independently.
- Excellent team working ability, communication skills, and flexibility.
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and develop cross-organization partnerships.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
- Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.

Desired Characteristics
- PhD degree in Engineering, Physics, or related fields is a plus.
- Proficiency in wet chemical process development.
- Familiarity with a range of manufacturing processes and operations outside of machining, e.g., inspection, welding.
- Exposure to emerging manufacturing trends, such as digital thread, additive manufacturing technologies.
- Experience in hardware-software system integration and digital and analogue electronics development.
- A working knowledge in the development of factory automation and robotic tools.
- Experience in writing compelling proposals and executing government-funded programs.
- A record of publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
- Strong influencing skills with customers, senior leadership, and project teams.
