RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P)-Center for Advanced Urbanism-MIT Resilient Communities Lab (RCL), to join a team working on sustainable solutions for climate change adaptation that integrates traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and STEAM as part of a collaboration with Native Land Conservancy, the North American Indian Center of Boston, and GreenRoots. The goal is to build a collaborative network between academic, community, and policy groups across Massachusetts to mainstream TEK-STEAM knowledge in identifying critical regional socio-ecological systems that must be addressed in order to improve equitable sustainability and adaptation outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Will collaborate with Janelle Knox-Hayes to review the development of research; oversee and guide TAs/RAs/students working on the initiative; manage the coordination of the research to ensure deadlines are met; be integrated into broader SA+P efforts to build research and teaching around Indigenous studies; contribute to courses that facilitate Tribal client relationships in partnership with the Solve Indigenous Fellows program; and help cultivate practical experience in Indigenous planning.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: master's degree in community economic development, urban planning, geography, environmental sciences, or related field; familiarity with Indigenous scholarship/practice; experience working with Indigenous communities; research or practice experience with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, ideally in North America, although other geographies will be considered; competency in multi- and cross-cultural and intergenerational work; four years’ direct experience working on topics related to climate adaptation and mitigation and sustainability, including equity, environmental justice, and/or resilience; and excellent research, design, and written and verbal communication skills. PREFERRED: excellent qualitative and quantitative research skills; working knowledge of pre- and post-colonial impact theory, social theory, and/or race theory; and project management experience.
