Occupational Summary

Classification created to permit compensation to individuals performing research on Campus and in the Medical Center using University facilities without detailed supervision. Incumbents may guide the research of others and participate, to a limited degree, in classroom instruction. The use of this classification is reserved for those who have either received a doctorate or have demonstrated equivalent professional attainment. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs. It is not subject to the Wage and Salary system.


Work Performed

The Research Associate will focus on the following, but not limited to these duties:

  • Independent research under the guidance of the Principal Investigator
  • The conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities
  • Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research
  • Compliance with good scholarly and research practices of the Staats lab and compliance with Staats lab standard operating procedures and data management plans.
  • Perform cell culture based experiments to evaluate adjuvant activity in vitro based on measurement of adjuvant-stimulated cytokine/chemokine secretion.
  • Perform intranasal, intramuscular and/or sublingual immunization of mice with collection of blood and/or mucosal samples pre- and post-immunization.
  • Monitor antigen-specific, vaccine-induced antibodies (IgG, IgG subclasses, IgA, IgE) in samples collected from mice by ELISA.
  • Design and execute experiments and interpret the data.
  • Collaborate with other laboratory team members and the computational scientists.
  • Review raw data with the Staats lab members (lab meeting presentation) and prepare experimental summaries to share with the adjuvant comparison research team.
  • Maintain comprehensive laboratory records
  • Participate in the preparation of progress reports for submission to the NIH and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
