Research Assistant - Periodontics Job at The University of Iowa
The College of Dentistry is looking for an individual ready to start their career by providing aid in seeking to determine the impact of Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity on the oral microbiome and the host immune responses using clinical studies. The research involves human subject research that includes recruiting patients, collecting oral and blood samples, and a laboratory component that includes genomic material processing, sequencing, and data analysis. Job Duties:
- Review and read articles on oral microbiome, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
- Critically analyze available literature and identify gaps in literature.
- Perform microbial and host DNA and RNA isolation according to the standardized protocols established in the lab.
- May collect oral and blood samples from enrolled patients and volunteers.
- May present results at the local/international meetings and lab meetings.
- Maintain and update the patient data base.
- Assist in data analysis and visualization utilizing Qualtrics and/or RedCap.
- Prepare abstracts and assist in manuscript preparation.
- Assist with IRB related to protocol modifications.
- Screen, obtain consents, and recruit human subjects according to the IRB protocol.
- Monitor recruitment and enrollment progress.
- Order supplies as needed for the lab.
- May supervise dental students and residents in data management, subject recruitment and sample collection.

College of Dentistry – Pediatric Dentistry (Iowa City, IA)
Salary: $46,288 to commensurate (Pay Grade: 3A)
Schedule: 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday
This position is on-site.
REQUIRES:
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, or equivalent; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Previous experience in subject recruitment and data collection.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Qualtrics, RedCap.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary group.
Desirable:
- Certified in Phlebotomy.
- Experience/Knowledge in Periodontology, Oral Health, Obesity.
