Job Summary

The Port of Tacoma’s Security Department is recruiting for Relief Security Officers. These positions are responsible for the protection of life and property throughout the Port area and immediate environment. Security Officers are proprietary security officers, authorized to carry a firearm charged with the safety, security and protection of port personnel, its stakeholders, and all properties in accordance with federal, state and local laws.
These are non-benefited positions with no guarantee as to the number of hours to be allocated.

Primary Functions

  • Enforce all applicable port security-related federal, state and local laws and regulations and the general law and order of the Port of Tacoma community. Follows all security, traffic and safety rules and regulations and engage in support activities to first responders.
  • Execute Port of Tacoma security duties encompassing the physical security of all port areas, waterways and adjacent port shoreline security, information security (protecting sensitive security information), supply-chain security and others.
  • Monitor and control access in/out of Port facilities at assigned hours.
  • Dedicated exclusively to 24-hour port safety and security activities, responsible for patrol and surveillance of the Port of Tacoma and neighboring port industrial communities. Executes command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I) duties at control center.
  • Responsible for the prevention of transportation security incidents, security breaches, and crime within the assigned port areas.
  • Take proper action at the scene of transportation security and criminal incidents, to include executing requests for assistance, evacuation of personnel, administering first aid, gathering evidence, identifying witnesses, drafting incident reports, participating in Incident Command structure, and others.
  • Conduct initial traffic, accident and other port security-related investigations, including cargo loss and general theft.
  • Execute surveillance of operations terminals and cargo storage areas and conduct physical inspections of terminal buildings, operational areas, waterways, etc.
  • Initiate and submit daily reports covering port security and shift activities/assignments.
  • Maintain communications and respond to assistance and other related activities of other law enforcement agencies, providing support to first responders.

Required Education and Experience

Minimum education is a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Education must also include one of the following:

  • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement or security academy; or
  • Completion of other relevant security or law enforcement training.

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a security or police officer (civilian, military or other related applicable field). Must be able to train and demonstrate the safe and proper use of firearms and must maintain an excellent driving record. Must maintain a valid Washington State Driver License and a valid State of Washington License to Carry a Concealed Pistol and maintain eligibility to possess this license.

Additional Requirements

Must have knowledge and skills in the following areas: the use, care and safe handling of firearms and radio equipment; laws controlling, and the procedures, practices and techniques necessary to execute Port of Tacoma Patrol operations; laws, codes and regulations concerning port security activities, transportation security incidents, criminal activity, emergency response, Incident Command Structure and National Incident Management System, and others as applicable; techniques, practice and procedures necessary for effective interaction with the general public, victims, suspects and officers of other agencies and municipalities; Port security duty manuals, facility security plans, departmental organizations, administrative direction and culture and all other applicable regulations and policies; basic personal computer and technology skills. Must be able to perform investigative duties and emergency vehicle operations; apply defensive tactics, use of force policies, intermediate weapons, standard policing and tactical equipment, serve as a first responder in emergency situations and perform first aid procedures, including CPR.
Must have the ability to: cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others; analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine a proper course of action to be taken; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; write and speak effectively, accurately and comprehensively; learn administrative procedures connected with port security work; physically perform all assigned duties; maintain an excellent driving record; respond favorably to stress; maintain a high degree of emotional stability; serve as a first responder in emergency situations and perform first aid procedures including CPR.

Must be willing to work any shift. Duties and responsibilities are performed mostly in a field environment, while executing Port security and policing activities. Operates from a Port vehicle or on-foot, executes operations in an office and a variety of field areas and environments, and performs duties in unpredictable conditions and frequent exercise of moderate physical effort.
The Port of Tacoma has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy to safeguard the health of Port employees, their families, and the public we serve, as well as to meet the requirements of Executive Order 14042, which requires federal contractors like the Port to adopt and enforce a mandatory vaccination policy. Effective 12/8/2021 the federal mandate and Port policy have been suspended due to a federal court injunction until further notice.
In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Port of Tacoma and ILWU Local 22, Article VII-Personnel Practices, Section 7.7, Qualified Port employees will have preference on job openings within their own union.
In accordance with the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986, all persons offered employment must provide acceptable proof of identity and authorization to work in the US. Such proof will be required prior to employment.
The successful candidate must possess (or obtain within 30 days of employment) a valid driver's license. Candidate must be able to successfully complete a post-offer drug screen and background investigation, with some positions requiring a post-offer physical. Candidate must also be able to obtain/maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which is a program managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
