Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) is looking for a R&D Design Engineer for our New Horizons Studio:

Summary

New Horizons Studio (NHS) is a Hyundai Motor Group unit with locations in Bozeman, Montana, and Fremont, California. The mission of NHS is to make products for future customers who want or need to travel over terrains which are challenging for conventional ground vehicles. We believe that the combination of robotic technology to car design will lead to ground vehicles with much greater mobility. We call these ultimate mobility vehicles (UMV). UMVs are enabled by a diverse range of design concepts and technologies. This role will be part of the team that is developing an UMV for crewed operations. This role will play a key role in the development of robotized suspension technology and other core functional areas for UMVs. This position based at our Bozeman center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

• Collaborate in a team to design and test of new electric rotary geared actuators and robotized suspension systems.
• For other core functional areas, ideate new concepts and evaluate those concepts thru virtual worlds and physics and math based simulation, physical demonstrations / prototypes of suitable technology maturity. For concepts that show potential continue simulation, testing and iterate the design into higher fidelity prototype.
• Identify design constraints and communicate to other stakeholders using collaboration and engineering data management tools. Gather and document feedback, requirements, specifications, and risks analysis that could be useful for future concepts, designs, or demos.
• Support the transition to manufacturing by recommending manufacturing methods and designing prototype tooling and fixtures for assembly of vehicles and subsystems. As needed identify, research, and engage with vendors with novel manufacturing methods
• Collaborate with computing and control software engineers, and external development partners to support strategic decisions about vehicle design.
• Plan and implement additional projects, budget planning, and purchasing processes, and other administrative tasks outside your core area as assigned.
• Provide direction and guidance to student interns and contract engineers as appropriate.
• Keep up with the latest advancements in your area.
• Travel up to 10% of time domestically and internationally.

Experience and Skills:

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Working knowledge of mechanical CAD or electrical CAD software.
• Able to develop CAD models parametric design methods.
• Knowledge of subtractive and additive manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of electronics and electrical circuits.
• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to plan work and meet deadlines.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Disciplined to learn and apply new skills and knowledge. Self-starter who is able to handle multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
• Experienced in coordinating work between an internal team and external partners/vendors.

Education and Experience:

• Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field of engineering. A bachelor’s degrees in science or math may also apply with relevant work experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience in research and development, new product initiatives, or product engineering.
  • Experience in manufacturing and assembly processes used in the fabrication of mechatronics, consumer electronics, scientific equipment, automotive components or aerospace products.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent skills in MS Office tools (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.)
  • Excellent time and task management skills.
  • Experience working in culturally diverse team environment.

  Preferred Competences

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and Simscape.
  • MS of PhD in a field of engineering.
  • Proficient skills in using tasks management and engineering documentation management tools such as Confluence or Jira or Valispace
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory Driving Record
