DOT is seeking an experienced and motivated Strategic Initiatives Specialist for its Public Space Unit in the Division of Transportation Planning & Management to support strategic public realm planning across NYC. The Public Space Unit is responsible for engaging New Yorkers to reimagine and utilize streets as public space from comprehensive and innovative planning to application-based programs including Open Streets, Street Seats, Shared Streets, and Plaza to ensuring vibrancy with Public Space Equity Program, concessions, and cultural programming.

The successful candidate will provide strategic planning, design, and analysis support for Public Space efforts citywide. The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively and inclusively, seeking to cultivate continued professional development and effectively communicate with all stakeholders. The candidate will need to work closely with internal DOT units and partner organizations to deliver plans and studies in coordination with agency strategic, policy, and planning work. The position also requires close coordination with multiple city agencies, state authorities, Business Improvement Districts, and other community-based organizations. Other tasks include overseeing a small team managing planning studies including scope development, consultant oversight, budget review, and publication support, preparing and giving public presentations, reviewing planning and policy documents, attending public meetings, and strategic tracking and mapping of plans, goals, and metrics. The ideal candidate will be expected to be familiar with national and global public space planning and design precedents. Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) mission is to provide for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and to maintain and enhance the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of our primary customers, City residents.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with emphasis in transportation, city or urban planning, sustainability, civil or transportation engineering, urban studies or design, architecture, business or public administration, economics, operations research, organizational behavior, or a related field; and two (2) years of satisfactory, full-time experience in an area related to the above-described duties; or
2. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must possess at least one year of the experience as described under 1.

Preferred Skills

Excellent organization and project management skills; ability to write persuasively about technical subject matter, ability to manage and track multiple projects and budgets, presentations and meeting facilitation, drafting and design; graphics and desktop publishing (InDesign, Illustrator, CAD), PowerPoint, and other presentation skills, bi-lingual in Spanish a plus.
