Laboratory Technician (LT)- Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (Half-Time)
Qualifications:
The incumbent must have one year of experience as a laboratory assistant, laboratory technical assistant, laboratory technician. A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for all of the required experience. Preference will be given to applicants with microbiological experience.
Job Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for performing support functions in the Environmental Microbiological Laboratory. The laboratory technician must adhere to all quality assurance requirements, methods, and standard operation procedures.
Position Responsibilities:
Support Functions and Analysis- The incumbent is responsible for independently preparing analytical media, logging samples and ensuring that samples meet acceptance criteria, and follow all chain of custody requirements according to laboratory procedures, Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration requirements. The incumbent will use the laboratory information management system (LIMS) to log samples, track samples, enter sample results, and to release reports to stakeholders. The incumbent will be expected to participate in annual and quarterly quality control and proficiency testing. If trained to analyze samples, the incumbent will ensure that assigned samples are tested in a timely manner in adherence to all regulatory hold-times.
Quality Control & Quality Assurance- The incumbent performs routine daily, weekly, and monthly quality control and quality assurance duties. These duties include performance of required quality control for each applicable test method, troubleshooting of quality control failures, and calibration and maintenance of equipment/instrumentation as needed. It is the responsibility of the incumbent to report any, and all quality failures to the laboratory supervisor, manager, and/or quality assurance officer. The incumbent may be required to complete or give information for an “Opportunity for Improvement” analysis for quality control failures.
Safety and Training- The incumbent will maintain awareness and understanding of laboratory safety and security. This includes following good hygiene practices when handling biological samples and chemical reagents. The incumbent will be responsible for following all laboratory procedures for discarding biological and chemical waste.
The incumbent will be required to complete laboratory training including method, LIMS, quality, and safety training. The incumbent will also be responsible for completing all training required by LDH, OPH, Comprehensive Public Training Program (CPTP), and regulatorily required training.
The incumbent performs other duties, which may be necessary to the smooth, efficient operation of the laboratory.
Additionally, the incumbent may be required to work weekends or holidays to ensure continued operations as needed. As an essential employee of the OPH lab, the incumbent shall support emergency response by working as assigned.
Security Requirements:
The incumbent must be able to pass a criminal background check and/or security clearance.
Performance Measures:
The incumbent will successfully complete method training. The incumbent should score “acceptable” on quality control and proficiency tests.
