What You'll Do

As a project engineer in Y-12 Engineering, you will be responsible for coordinating and managing complex, multi-discipline engineering services in support of programs, projects and improvement activities of high importance to the organization. Positions will directly support and report to either Facility Engineering, Product & Manufacturing Engineering, or Safety Analysis Engineering, but will be responsible for coordination of activities involving personnel from all of Y-12 Engineering. Ensures Y-12 Engineering organization's performance of the established scope of work and directs development, maintenance, and execution of a project/task technical work scope within budget and schedule.

In Facility Engineering, the project engineer will be primarily responsible for coordinating Y-12 Engineering resources in support of major facility upgrade projects, technology maturation, and new technology implementation activities.

In Product & Manufacturing Engineering, the project engineer will be primarily responsible for coordinating Y-12 Engineering support to upcoming DSW program execution, including process development activities, tooling (from identification of need through design and manufacture), and product realization team support.

In Safety Analysis Engineering, the project engineer will be primarily responsible for coordinating Y-12 Engineering support to Safety Analysis improvement activities and commitments in response to audits and assessments.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  • OR a Master's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • OR a PhD in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.

In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year of nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2).

Preferred Job Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET.

  • Extensive technical expertise and full knowledge of related engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to various engineering disciplines.
  • Requires the ability to apply technical skills of engineering to the design, safety, and operation of facilities and/or processes within facilities; ability to prepare, read, and/or interpret complex engineering drawings and analysis; ability to conduct formal presentations to plant personnel and other interested parties; ability to review projects for technical accuracy; ability to present information clearly and effectively through the oral and written word.

  • Ability to work in a project team environment and communicate well with other disciplines, customers, and stakeholders.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
