The AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) THRIVE (Tacoma Husky Retention and Inclusive Vision of Excellence) Project is the University of Washington’s first AANAPISI (Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution) federal award and designates UW Tacoma as a minority serving institution. The project targets all undergraduate AAPI and low-income students, but especially those who are first-time in college. More information about the project is located here: here.

The AAPI THRIVE Project Director will oversee all components of this recently funded award and will work with offices across the UW Tacoma campus and with community partners to develop, implement, and evaluate grant services and activities as articulated in the project timeline. The Project Director will closely collaborate with a 3-member faculty leadership team: Principal Investigator, Rachel Endo (Dean & Professor, School of Education), and Co-Principal Investigators Cassie Miura (Assistant Teaching Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences) and Tanya Velasquez (Associate Teaching Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences). The Director will also supervise and/or support a dynamic team of faculty, staff, and students to implement the project’s objectives. The Project Director must demonstrate an ability and willingness to work effectively with a diverse range of students, administrators, faculty, staff, and community partners; possess a leadership framework that is supportive of flexibility, high expectations/high support of employees, inclusive excellence, and teamwork. The Project Director will also oversee all budget-related activities and reporting requirements, ensuring compliance with both University of Washington and U.S Department of Education grant regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Administration and Operations (65%)
  • Provide daily leadership, oversight, coordination, and monitoring, and direct key operational aspects of the AANAPISI project to ensure its successful implementation
  • Ensure that all project objectives are met accurately and by established deadlines, in compliance with sponsor, state, federal, and University of Washington regulations
  • Supervise and support AAPI THRIVE Project staff (Program Ops Specialist, Admin Assistant, student workers, and student interns), providing onboarding and orientation; taking corrective action as needed in partnership with the PI and UWT Staff HR team
  • Oversee strategic planning for the AAPI THRIVE Project in consultation with the grant leadership team and steering committee. Use data-informed approaches to ensure the ongoing effectiveness, efficiency, overall quality, and sustainability of operations, programs, and services. Work collaboratively with appropriate campus leaders and offices to institutionalize grant activities and raise ongoing awareness of AAPI students’ experiences and needs
  • Regularly communicate and meet with PI, Co-PIs, and project staff, including planning and facilitating regular meetings, and leading team-based initiatives and projects
  • Collaborate with and regularly update PI, Co-PIs, campus partners (including but not limited to Academic Affairs, Advancement, Enrollment Services, Equity & Inclusion, Financial Aid, and Student Affairs), the AAPI THRIVE Project Steering Committee, and community partners to ensure accurate and timely delivery of student services supportive of retention and success
  • Consult with the hired external evaluator on assessing and monitoring the project’s progress
  • Prepare for and facilitate formal and informal site visits involving the external evaluator, campus stakeholders, and community members
  • Create collaborative and effective work plans for project staff to ensure the project’s success

    Budget and Grants Management (20%)
  • Lead data collection, data disaggregation efforts, and project evaluation using Office 365 tools and other UW/T data systems
  • Prepare and submit regular fiscal reports
  • Oversee all budget, budget modifications, and expenditures
  • Regularly audit and update a project staff handbook
  • Write monthly, quarterly, interim, and annual performance reports, with support from the faculty leadership team and program manager
  • Maintain communication with the U.S. Department of Education AANAPISI program officer

    Campus & Community Engagement (10%)
  • Maintain ongoing communication with key campus and community stakeholders on project’s progress and upcoming opportunities
  • Participate in AANAPISI regional and national networks for grant awardees
  • Cultivate and sustain mutually beneficial partnerships with relevant AAPI-serving community organizations in Pierce County, South King County, and other regions where UWT students consider their primary residence, as well as the area’s community and technical colleges and K-12 districts
  • Establish and chair a community advisory steering committee

    Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Ethnic Studies (emphasis on Asian American or Pacific Islander Studies preferred), or related field.
  • 4 years minimum experience in project or program management
  • 2 years minimum experience in a supervisory role, managing direct reports, or overseeing student workers
  • Knowledge of student affairs and student development theory relevant to U.S. higher education as they relate to the educational experiences of AAPI and BIPOC college students
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to design and execute collaborative and individual projects
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively multitask and work independently in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of attention to detail, reliability, productivity, and efficiency
  • Excellent work ethic and standards, including a demonstrated ability to handle challenges and conflicts with confidentiality, cultural humility, discretion, and fairness
  • Advanced technology skills, including database development and management, and strong understanding of software systems including MS Word, Excel, Access, and navigating new web-based resources
  • Ability to occasionally travel and work some evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through an anti-racist and social justice framework

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Ethnic Studies (emphasis on Asian American or Pacific Islander Studies preferred), or related field.
  • Knowledge of University of Washington policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Knowledge of Washington State education systems.
  • Experience with grants management
  • Direct experience working with underserved or historically marginalized populations, including those who are AAPI and/or from low-income backgrounds
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current challenges related to the AAPI community as it impacts students, including awareness of mental health and inherited/intergenerational traumas
  • Experience working with TRiO or similar MSI (Minority Serving Institution) programs or services
  • Experience working in a higher education setting (advising, counseling, management, teaching, or equivalents)
  • Experience writing and administering federal grants
  • The ability to gather, organize, analyze, and present complex qualitative and quantitative data sets
