Job Description
The Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a full-time (9-month, tenure track) Professor / Director, Nevada Seismological Laboratory. The Director of Nevada Seismological Lab (NSL) will lead a world-class seismology research organization and contribute to reducing earthquake risk through fundamental science research, regional earthquake monitoring, and public service. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Science, the Director will have the vision and initiative to enhance an already thriving environment of education and innovative research in seismology and geophysics, in areas including earthquake monitoring and hazards, artificial intelligence and big data, earthquake physics and rupture processes, engineering and computational seismology, earthquake geodesy, and seismotectonics.
Responsibilities

Lead a diverse group of academic and administrative faculty, research scientists, technical and support staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.

Realize the potential of NSL's mission of reducing earthquake risk by advancing seismological research, regional earthquake monitoring, and statewide public service.

Create new opportunities for research, aimed at making UNR the venue of choice in seismology and geophysics for future students, faculty, and staff.

Effectively engage the media and the public in raising awareness and understanding of earthquake risks and hazards to affect state, regional, and national public policy.

Work with the NSL Network Manager to successfully oversee grants, contracts and the management of personnel for a diverse portfolio of projects.

Maintain and strengthen existing relationships with external partners and seek out new opportunities for collaborations and partnerships.

Develop and implement educational and outreach programs related to seismology and geophysics for K-12 students, as well as public education and outreach programs for the broader community.

Develop and maintain partnerships with other institutions and organizations to expand NSL's research and educational programs. The Director will actively seek out opportunities for collaboration with other universities, government agencies, and industry partners to further the fields of seismology, earthquake science, and multi-hazard networking.

Promote diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the NSL's activities, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of the NSL community.

Provide guidance and support to the NSL’s administrative team to ensure the smooth operation of the organization.

Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the organization's mission and goals, collaborating with other departments within the College of Science and the university to promote interdisciplinary research and educational opportunities.

Advise graduate students and contribute classes to the academic curriculum.
Required Qualifications
-
Ph.D. in seismology, geophysics, or a related field, with significant experience in research, education, and leadership roles.

Must be U.S. citizen to meet requirements set by DOE grantors.

Valid Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Extensive experience in program development and project management.

Collaborative leader who fosters a culture of teamwork and innovation among NSL staff.

Deep understanding of the technical and scientific aspects of seismology and geophysics, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge to practical problems related to earthquake risk reduction and public safety.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Department Information
The NSL operates a prominent regional seismic network as part of the USGS Advanced National Seismic System and is the statewide agency designated to provide earthquake information to the public and to first-responders. The NSL director oversees a regional network of over 200 broadband and strong motion stations that span Nevada and areas of eastern California and operates its own high-throughput data communications system. NSL operations include research and strategic partnerships with Department of Energy laboratories and the Nevada National Security Site, as well as energy and mining companies throughout the state.
The Laboratory disseminates seismic information to the public and regularly publishes research results. It serves as a data repository and a resource for the public on matters related to earthquake activity and earthquake risks in Nevada and adjoining states. The laboratory also handles grant- and contract-supported research on seismic problems of national and international importance, and interacts closely with the University of Nevada Reno (
