PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Hiring Range: $29.45 - $47.32 hourly ($71,589.85 - $98,435.70 annually), depending on experience and education beyond the minimum qualifications
Lateral candidates are highly encouraged and welcome! We will honor your experience and certification level to determine your hiring salary on an individual basis.
Hiring Bonus: New employees are eligible for a $2,000 bonus; with $1,000 paid on the first payroll, and $1,000 paid upon the completion of the Aurora911 Basic Training Academy.
Full Salary Range of the Professional Development Specialist: $71,589 – $111,859.15 annually
Bilingual team members may also qualify for additional compensation.

Aurora911 is staffed by public safety professionals who are trained to answer and triage 9-1-1 and non-emergency telephone calls, as well as dispatch police, fire, paramedic, and alternative response resources. Our dedicated 9-1-1 professionals gather and analyze critical life-safety information from callers and send the information via computer to police, fire and or paramedic dispatchers who are responsible for coordinating the response of field responders. The Aurora911 team works in partnership with Aurora Police Department, Aurora Fire Rescue, Falck ambulance, Aurora Mobile Response Team, Information Technology, and other city departments to ensure the safety and quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors in the City of Aurora.
Aurora911 processes 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls from the citizens and visitors in the City of Aurora. More than 600,000 telephone calls for service are received annually, the majority of which result in the dispatch of police, fire, rescue, or emergency medical responders.
The Emergency Communications Professional Development Specialist is a self-motivated team contributor who provides education, cultivates technical and human skills, and facilitates continued growth for all members of the department. This position is responsible for providing basic instruction, cross-disciplinary training, remedial instruction, and continuing education. This position is selected through application and competitive process, which includes external candidates. The incumbent has completed all required education and certification related to training, instruction, and quality assurance reviews of emergency communications processes. A Professional Development Specialist will be able to independently receive, and process 911 emergency calls and non-emergency calls for Police, Fire and Ambulance services, as well as dispatch for police and fire. A Professional Development Specialist must be willing to work in a 24-hour environment, which includes shifts on swings and graveyards, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call. This is a safety-sensitive position that handles confidential information.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Professional Development Supervisor
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • As assigned, is responsible for the facilitation of the Aurora911 Basic Training Academy: this includes curriculum development, classroom instruction, evaluation, and feedback, coaching and practical training with related technological platforms.
  • As assigned, is responsible for completing and reviewing Quality Assurance Reviews in all protocol disciplines.
  • As assigned, creates. and distributes continuing education curriculum to the team through a variety of mediums.
  • As assigned, develops, and implements in-person education curriculum for a variety of audiences.
  • As assigned, assist with emergency dispatching protocol testing and implementation.
  • As assigned, assists with establishing and maintaining agency accreditations
  • Provides remediation education to team members who require specific assistance in various performance areas.
  • Ensures education curriculum is in current and continual alignment with department and city policies.
  • Provides feedback to team members which is designed to optimize personal and professional success through performance enhancement.
  • Can provide operational support to the department through the duties and responsibilities described in the Emergency Communications Specialist job series.
  • Maintains a system of organization to accurately track and report on various unit related deliverables, outcomes, compliance rates, etc.
  • Contributes to the identification of root causes in common performance issues and develops education to correct the issue.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Successful Completion of Aurora911 Basic Training Program, to include all relevant certifications (CCIC/NCIC, EMD, EFD, CPR)
  • Successful completion of “Services” radio channel training.
  • Successful completion of radio discipline training for both police and fire dispatching
  • Successful completion of Communication Training Officer (CTO) certification training
  • External candidates must demonstrate an equivalent mastery of emergency communications training and experience.
Experience:
  • Internal candidates must demonstrate previous successful performance as an ECS-3, maintaining an “achieves” performance rating in all anchors of job performance.
  • Five years’ experience in 9-1-1 emergency communications.
  • Five years’ experience in public safety dispatching.
  • Two years’ experience in providing training as a certified CTO.
  • Two years’ previous experience in 9-1-1 related classroom instruction highly preferred.
  • External candidates should have at least Two (2) years verifiable experience in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement, to include specific experience with International Academy of Emergency Dispatch, Priority Dispatch, ProQA, EMD and EFD.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Required through training throughout employment.

Essential Personnel:
  • Members of Aurora911 are considered essential personnel and are subject to recall, extended shifts, and other forms of mandatory overtime to ensure continuity of emergency services to the city.
  • Members of the Professional Development Team will be responsive to the training and professional development needs of all team members. This will require a flexible schedule and the ability to adjust on short notice to provide in-person training to members of a 24-hour operation who require in-person training and remediation.
  • Periodic paid breaks of up to 20 minutes in duration may be given during a continuous work shift, dependent upon shift length and operational work volume.
Physical Demands:
  • Light physical activity requiring lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 10 pounds with or without assistance.
